Not 100% sure on this, but I think season 1 showed a newspaper with an 1883 date.

This season is 1884-5. Although some references in the script name (or allude to) persons, places and events of historical record, it is not a documentary. Like Downton, It’s a soap opera with horses, pretty frocks, and people scared of The Gay.

What will our Larry do when he opens Marian's letter?
Now that Jack is cut loose from the only family he's known.....will our boys need to console each other? ......or just head back to The Haymarket?
Maybe Madame Dashkova can guide!

I realized this week I've become hooked on The Gilded Age and part of that is how good Cynthia Nixon is. So outstanding. Aunt Ada is a great part.
+++++++++++++++++++++SPOILER++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++
Tonight's epi, when Oscar breaks down in front of his family about John was a great scene.
Marian and Aunt Ida's empathy got me all verklempt.

I believe it's supposed to be set in the early 1880s.
It was around that time that Mrs. Astor was forced to recognize the 'upstart' Vanderbilts, which the Russell family seems to mirror in the tv show. However, 'The Four Hundred' - the list of the 400 people who constituted 'Society', and based on the number that could fit in Caroline Astor's ballroom - was not compiled until the early 1890s, if I recall correctly. Since the list is already mentioned in the show, the program plays a bit fast and loose with the historical timelines.
Also, the marriage of Gladys to the Duke is also set 10 years earlier than it was real life, if Gladys is meant to be analogous with Consuelo Vanderbilt, who married the Duke of Marlborough in the mid 1890s.

I listened to a reputable figure many of you know mention when he served in Afghanistan his superior advised to write a letter to be opened in case of death. That sounds like a smart idea. Besides any personal messages, I might also choose to list things like the following:
Where are copies of my estate plan/will
Name of my lawyer, doctor
Name of my financial advisor
Account numbers
Benefits coordinator contact (retirement pension and healthcare).
Other personal contacts needing to know I'm gone.
Circling back to the above conversation, I'm glad I chose family versus a professional executor. My estate is not complicated, so a professional would have been needlessly expensive IMO and frankly, based on the two outfits I contacted, I am more confidant with family taking care of it.

TonyDown reacted to rvwnsd in Canada opens their LGBTQ+ Suicide Hotline to Americans
Moderator's Note: Not sure whether everyone is familiar with Snopes.com, a fact-checking site that proves/debunks items circulating on the internet and other media. They have conducted a pretty thorough analysis of the claim that Canada has opened its LGBTQ+ suicide line to US citizens, including contacting officials from Canada's national health system. Rather than rehash the entire analysis, I'll cut to the chase - there is no evidence that this claim is true. Here's a link to their analysis. I encourage everyone to read it.
This topic has been laid to rest and is now locked.

Granted there is a tad more reluctant tolerance, but U.S. society in general is a looooong way from treating gay people the same as everyone else.

TonyDown reacted to RadioRob in And we're back...
Greetings folks...
As you might have noticed, this site has been offline since around mid-day Tuesday. Our prior hosting provider decided that they are unable to continue hosting our website and had ended service to us. Unfortunately they did not provide any notification to me about this decision and I was forced to move the site to a new server without any sort of heads up. This includes arranging for the new hosting company, configuring the new server to meet the technical requirements, getting a copy of our current data, restoring that data (over 300GB of files), recovering the database (over 18.5 million records in that database taking up 11GB of space for the DB alone), and reconfiguring the software itself to run in the new environment.
While migrating there was also some technical issues that I ran into that required me to coordinate with Invision's technical support team. So that back and forth added additional time to the mix as well.
And to pile on further… all of this occurred while I'm traveling for my day job. So I've been doing this while in a hotel in between doing my day job on the road.
There are most likely several other things that will need to be fixed still and I'm working through them. For example, email may only be partially working. I still need to setup things like SPF and DKIM for the new server so our emails don't flag as spam. There are other settings that might need to be redone to work in the new server as well that I'm not thinking about yet. (As you might have imagined, I've not had much sleep during this whole process.)
But anyway... you get the idea. No... we're not going anywhere! This was a minor setback but we'll continue to move forward. Thank you all for your understanding and support!
Rob

Thank you for sharing that. Well done vlog.
What I typically don't like is when a straight vlogger does a piece on gay cruising. I recall one at an isolated beach in Japan, where they caught one fellow by surprise. Imagine expecting privacy when a silly reporter appears and sticks a microphone in your face.
Of course there was Nico Hines, the straight Brit reporter that did a piece on how many Olympians he found were hooking up on Grindr. His piece identified their home countries in some cases. This kind of content treats us like zoo animals, in my opinion, and are very questionable.
There are, or used to be, gay websites that listed public hook up locations. In the age of the Internet, queer discretion has certainly evolved.

Poor Oscar. Now he’ll never be able to afford to get his bangs trimmed.

TonyDown reacted to CheckCar in Exposing Traditionally Discreet Queer Social Practices
Jon Dean, a popular gay male podcaster and social media content creator in the UK, just uploaded a “mini-doc” to YouTube on cruising. In the mini-doc, he spotlights actual cruising sites, making them public for anyone to see.
It has been years since I’ve cruised in parks, tearooms, etc. (fun times). But one of the things I remember most is how their success depended on their discretion. As queer mating rituals have moved heavily online, I continue to worry about the exposure of our “underground” practices to those outside of our networks.
In fact, I sometimes worry about who accesses this website, given the information we share here. How (if at all) can we protect queer discretion in an age when everything and anything can get exposed to the world?

Yup, it does sound annoying, but perhaps he doesn't realize you find him aggressive.
It sounds like you engage him with frequent replies. Will he stop with the frequent texts, if you stop replying so much?
