If you are asking what is to be gained by posting an ad using somebody else's pictures, then my guess is that the escort is making the statistical judgement that enough potential clients will be horned up enough to go through with the encounter anyway.

Another explanation that I've read in the forum is that the escort has a day job or some other reason to not be recognized and claims to be using pictures of similar looking guys.

But then, I'm not a provider, and I've never placed a "fake ad".

If it were only the pictures that were fake I could understand it. But it often appears to be that the advertiser never responds to anyone inquiring about them. This is the part I don't get.

One masseur told me that if the prospective client does not include a phone number in the email he will not respond. He sees those people as time wasters and not serious.

It is possible that escort was active at some point, isn’t any longer and can’t be bothered to take down the ad, it is simpler for him to just not lookup that email address’s inbox and leave that phone off.

I think there are many possible reasons. Prior responses include some.

To add a darker view...

There are predators out there. They recognize that the hiring community includes inexperienced guys. Guys terrified of exposure. Perhaps physically intimidated. And... its human nature for people to be polite, avoid offensive behavior, even when they're being treated badly.

If no one ever got flummoxed, if no client ever paid for ripoff service or fakes arriving... theyd stop doing it. There is, apparently, an adequate supply of victims to make the scams financially worthwhile.

Consider a parallel: EVERYONE knows to never give out personal data to phone inquiries... or that the IRS never telephones. Except... not really.... there are enough people falling prey to scams to justify the scammers' efforts.

Add that with anything online... theres always potential for some societal moron who gets his jollies disrupting others' lives. Another parallel: theres nothing to be gained by many of the attacks on our computers... they simply disrupt so some pimply-faced dropout can giggle about it, living in his mom's basement. Id bet a few of the fake rentguy ads are placed by two 14 year old boys just goofing around.

I’ve wondered the same. I think some people are so disturbed that they will do anything for a little attention. They’ll post fake pics just to get more views and maybe they get off on that? I don’t know but I see more fake ads (and I’m sure there are more fake clients too) than ever.

I'd ad that the threshold for entry to the field is low. I suspect many inexperienced, financially strapped or just clueless, disrespectful people think its an easy way to make some money, that there's a sucker born every minute, etc., so they just concoct an ad. And then if they get an inquiry that involves some level of response or professionalism that looks like they'll have to deliver something more in services than stand and pose they avoid that client. Hopefully there's some learning there that this field isn't for everybody and they move on.

I also wouldn't underestimate substance use factoring in, as its just so much more prevalent than most of us realize. I have two friends with children in recovery who tried this when they were young, feeding a habit and in an "anything goes" mindset.

I came close to disaster with one of these fakers - a real smooth grifter. I was horny and he was the only one available at short notice. I foolishly had him come to my home, and though he wasn't the same guy as in the pics, he looked decent enough. He asked me to get him some water, and while i was out of the room he was looking around the apartment for loose mail with my name on it; he did some instant social media searching with my address, and soon was threatening to shout my real name all over the neighborhood if I did not "tip" him. I got him out, but discovered afterwards that he had stolen some things from me. The ad disappeared the next day. Many lessons learned.

My experience is that fakes figure that if they can at least get in your door, or you in their door, that you'll pay at least something to either complete the encounter, or at least give them something for them to leave w/out a scene. Or, they hope that you're not observant enough to realize that the photos are fake.

The way this usually works:

The photos, or some, will be of a guy close enough to be an old photo or a good-day photo. Once they get to your place, or even in a hotel, most clients expect to pay regardless. "You've taken my time I could have arranged someone else" is the reasoning if you change your mind.

Sometimes the photos are not anywhere near close but they still work it this way.

There's as much money in doing it this way as the legit guys make, and you usually don't have to do anything if you're ugly.

To avoid the 1st type, which is very common, I always look to the ugliest candid photo. Most guys will throw in one photo that's a current selfie together with the older and professional photos. That photo is often accurate.

Tenderloin, very sry to hear that. But thx a lot for the lesson and warning!

I was foolish - let the little head do the thinking.

Among the lessons, if you are seeing someone for the first time who hasn't been reviewed here:

1. If he shows up and he ain't the dude in the picture, don't let him in. If he's been dishonest about such a basic thing, he's probably not going to give you the experience you are looking for.

2. Make sure no small valuables (rings, wallets, etc.) or personally identifying objects (ie, old mail) are in plain sight

3. Don't leave him unattended. I should have said "let's go together to the kitchen to get us a drink"

4. Be prepared with a bluff if things go south: ie "my next door neighbor is a bouncer and a friend -- I just have to bang on this wall and he will be here in a moment, so please leave now" or "I am going to call the police and tell them that you are a date gone bad, so unless you want to deal with them, leave now."

5. Most importantly, if it isn't working or your start to feel uncomfortable, end it quickly, offer him a portion of his fee, and get him out

I think we can make a whole new series of "scam city" out of this and put it on Netflix !

TOTALLY love the bluff strategy. Frighten the jerk who's trying to frighten you. He's got more to lose.

The only problem is that he is more likely to react with violence. If it is not him beyond a doubt....don't let him through the door!

Look, video surveillance cameras that record all motion are as cheap as $25 and work great and set up with your smartphone in 10 minutes. Anyone who doesn't have these now is foolish. Especially guys like us.

Which ones do you recommend, I was thinking on getting them for the house?

Agreed, but even if he is the guy in the photos, things can still go south with a scammer. I had one guy (who looked like his pics) who had agreed to bottom, but he kept slipping my little tadger between his cheeks instead of into the endzone. After a few minutes of frustrated rubbing, I called an end to it and sent him packing. Luckily he was a twink, so I could intimidate him enough to get him out.

Absolutely this one from Amazon for $37. There are coupons to take it down another $5. 1080p and sd micro slot to take up to a 128gb card (to keep the last 2 weeks 24 hr recordings).

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077ZSPD26/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?smid=A2HS750VI2UUZ8&psc=1

I have the YI brand which is also great and has a card slot. It's really the Nest. Nest costs $200, YI costs $25. (Amazon)

My friend has the Zmodo brand but that brand does not have sd card slots and has proprietary power cords while most have generic micro-usb power cords. (Amazon)

All cams record motion and keep it for download for 3 days. SD Cards let you scroll though the past week 24/7. So there is no need to pay the $10/month cloud storage they try to upsell you to.

The first one may take 15 minutes to set up. After that additional ones take under 10 minutes. You can add from 12 to unlimited same-brand cams to the brand's app.

It's really hard to explain how simple, easy, and good a cam system is. Even 1 cam. And how cheap.

You get hooked. Looking live at your place while gone, 2-way talking to pets or visitors, answering the door remotely, recording anyone doing a crime, etc. etc. It solves half the problems we worry about here. (No one is going to attack or rob you when they know they're recorded).
