The smart phone topic cracks me up but I have my version of a flip phone, about half my email accounts are on AOL. Switching to Gmail has been a task I put off for a long time. Making the change is not easy and making notifications of new address is time consuming. I don't use email for contacting escorts, I prefer text but I was wondering about others in the Forum experience with updating their email accounts.

The work of switching emails for me recently was made a lot easier by using a password manager.

After creating the new email address, I went through the password manager list a few entries at a time, and slowly but methodically moved over 300 accounts. This took some time, but it also gave me the opportunity to update website addresses and delete accounts I no longer wanted to use.

Once everthing was changed, I kept the old email address around for three months to catch any stragglers, and then deleted the old address.

Related, advice:

Whatever you switch to, get a decent email client.

One of the effects of tech .... never-ending "improvements" designed to make things simpler, dumb-downed. The results are often frustrating. And may conflict with user preferences, or habits.

I have some gmail, and some yahoo-family mail. Pulling those pop accounts into outlook, or the generic-default email app on my tablet.... email is fine.

Read email on the providers' apps or the web, its sorted and threaded, and the latest response is often buried in the middle of the thread. I am always frustrated by the way gmail presents mail.... and for work, my clients with gmail are the ones who most often report they didnt get my mail (but find it later) and who cant find items to re-send.

So, no comment regarding the reliability or safety, but a note regarding administrative aspects.

I hate this about gmail! I freely confess I much preferred aol, and still use that account for personal email.

It was a long time ago that I switched to Gmail, but I do not remember the switch being difficult or time-consuming.

I switched back when it was invitation-only. It was much easier to use back then. Now, I find it to be a rather frustrating service, but the others don't seem to be much better.

I have a small confession: not long ago I had to re-enter an e-mail box in Outlook to mate with the Gmail server. It took me nearly three days.

I always liked the format of AOL email too. But, my account was hacked when it was used to send ads from my email address to all my contacts (or everyone I had ever sent and email to). Discovered it when at work one day, and I got an email from myself (AOL address) to my work email, and so did a lot of my co-workers.

Called AOL, they said the fix was to take my AOL address out of my contacts. Happened again, so cancelled AOL. Then just about a year later, happened again. Called AOL, said I canceled. They said something about they leave the account available for a while in case I wanted to come back. Told them never would after all 3 hacks, and to get rid if it.
