You can do as suggested above -- Or IF you really like and care about her then wait for a special occasion - Xmas/Landmark Birthday/St. Swithins Day -- If the cost is not an issue then why not buy her a "Starter Piece" to build her own collection? And phrase the card in a way that makes it clear that it is a Starter Piece

Then you have done something nice for a friend that she would really appreciate.

I also never lend anything of value to friends or family including money that I cannot afford to not get back.

Hmmm, interesting idea, but i'll substitute a starter "knockoff"..... Gurl, have you seen the prices of REAL LV these days ?

Friends and family members have not asked me to lend them any of "my stuff," but if they did I would have to decline. Some people are NOT as careful as the owner; thus that's the reason for my position in declining their request to borrow. If something were to happen to the borrowed item-- the friendship/relationship would be adversely affected in some manner.

Your friend, apparently, has a problem if she can't accept your refusual: ask her why is she so determined to have you acquiesce to her request. Tell her to buy her own luggage and enjoy it, and that you'd hope that her receiving a "NO" response will not impair the relationship.

For completions sake:

"… For loan oft loses both itself and friend,

And borrowing dulls the edge of husbandry"

And

"This above all:

To thine own self be true,

And it must follow as the night the day,

Thou canst not then be false to any man."

I was in hospital for two months, and my Housemate lost my handicap placard. He denies any responsibility for it.

THAT's why I'm reticent to loan him anything.

Am I the only one who doesn't like the look of LV?

No, you're not.

It's cheap leather, covered in plastic. The only thing they make that's worthwhile are the steamer trunks.

Sir BN, you KNOW, its not about the look necessarily, it's about the status. Carrying a bag from Walmart does not have the same cache as one from LV... A man of your class and culture (and sexiness) KNOWS that surely ?

Status means little if the bag is a piece of shit to begin with.

Now, if you're carrying a Bottega or a nice Loro Piana brief, that's something else entirely.

No label. No monogram. Just quality leather and fine, old-world craftsmanship.

I like some of the LV Taiga luggage but I tend to like non-descript stuff. I used to travel a lot and have always been reluctant to carry something that says mug me... Combine that with extreme shyness which makes me not want to standout...

Oh but as to the original question, I wouldn’t lend it to your friend. It’s something you enjoy that’s yours and it’s your right to not use it. Why risk having it stolen, lost or damaged during her travels. I would never ask a friend of mine to lend me something they valued; friendships to me are too precious to risk...

Funny....whenever I see LV luggage....I just assume it’s fake.

It’s not my thing....but to each his own. Lord knows I have

plenty of “status” items that others must think rediculous.

On the topic at hand, I don't lend anything I can’t afford to lose.

Recently, I loaned an escort an expensive dress shirt to go

out to dinner with me in. The next morning he requested to

wear it that day to work with the promise of returning it.

After several meetings and no returned shirt, I bought him one

(in his size), as a gift and a gentle reminder.....his response?

“Great....now I have two!....Thanks so much!”.

For the record I do love dressing another man in my clothes and

it was hot as fuck helping him get dressed up in my shirt for work

the next day. I just chuckled and said “I’m glad you like them”.

Lend with an open hand and assume it’s never coming back. If you

can do that and be ok with it....you’ll be fine. If not....don’t do it.

Piece of shit or not, there are those that NEED the validation of perceived status. I was one of those people, which accounts for me having a perfectly matched set of LV luggage, totes and travel bags. As I got older I realized I dont need the validation, so the stuff is packed away in my closet, and I am considering giving it out for consignment. But even today, entertainers, especially those in the hip-hop community covet monogrammed LV, Gucci and other designer brands and make it still desirable for some....

I find your honesty about yourself refreshing. Good post sir! :)

Actually, yeah, doing something nice for her would really boil her bacon. :)

The last time I looked at their steamers, I think I saw some vintage ones, that had ironing boards and heaven knows what else that folded out. It was like Jetson's-Age traveling in the time of Joan Crawford. It was awesome.

Steamer trunks? Who’s buying steamer trunks? Who’s still traveling by steamer? And they certainly won’t fit in an overhead or beneath the seat in front of you. Lol

They make awesome accent pieces for your home. Can be used as a coffee table or side table, or for storage at the foot of your bed. And if the Titanic is ever put back in service, you're all set !
