Yes, my sixth grade teacher told my mom I was content to sit back, get good grades, ready to take extra duties assigned by the principal...but never initiate much on my own.

For my entire life, I tried to be more aggressive, but was only partly successful.

I did go back and see her in an assisted living center over 50 years later. She was no long capable of any deep conversation. But, she did remember me specifically so I am very glad to have tried to talk about it all those years later.

When she died her son sent me a letter thanking me remembering her so fondly almost my entire life.

this reminded me of a story my Mom told......way back when she was a "stewardess", she asked a prosperous-looking passenger if he had any investment advice....the passenger suggested an up-and-coming company called Minnesota Mining and Manufacturing.......no, she didn't take the advice

"Get gems and property....everything else is worthless"

If I had only listened!

Gems? Diamonds lose half their resale value as soon as you walk out of the store.

When I was 18 and about to leave the nest, my father handed me a dictionary. He had bookmarked a page, and told me that when I got a chance to read what he had highlighted. A few days later I opened the dictionary and he had drawn one line through the word "Impossible". I wish I had lived my life more in that spirit...

"Not making a decision is itself a decision." (By the time I heard that, I was already set in my ways.)

Or...in the immortal words of Rush....

"If you choose not to decide...you still have made a choice"

True...but I don't really care how much you PAID for them...

I care how much I can GET for them.

That and how easy it is to smuggle them out of Istanbul on a hot

summers night when things have gone poorly......grin

Trust me darling...diamonds are still a boy's best friend!
