I'm a purist about doughnuts, and I've given up. There hasn't been a decent doughnut in the U.S. in sixty years. Krispy Kreme is an abomination.

What I wouldn't give for a genuine old-fashion sinker.

Some of the Chinese bakeries here in San Francisco make unbelievably good yeasted, glazed doughnuts.

I grew up a block from the Helm's Bakery in Culver City. It was a different time. They would drive through the neighborhoods to sell their donuts. Not sure how someone would rate them, but as an 8 year old, they were wonderful.

The old Helms Building and sign is still there...but I think it's a furniture store now.

 

I'm not sure where the best donuts in LA are...but lately I've really been enjoying the yumminess at the Big Sugar Bakery downtown.
