I think what happened to you is customs/ immigration officer dependent. I wouldn't discount visiting canada because of that one time thing- unless they indicated to you that you could not revisit again....

I vaguely remember that years ago there was an Asian bodybuilder in the NYC area who I think was sometimes available for muscle worship who went to Canada to complete. He forgot (or hadn't been told) that he came to the US as an infant from Malaysia. He was stooped at the border upon his attempted re-entry and shipped immediately to Kuala Lumpur where I'm told years later he runs one of the better gyms in KL. Now if only I could remember his name. I'll be there later this month.
