Regarding the tragedy at Disney World: I'm puzzled that the victim's body was recovered in tact. Isn't it odd that an alligator would wait for prey, entrap the prey, swim away with the prey, but not consume the prey?

Usually they drown the prey, put in the bottom of the swamp and eat it afterwards once it's more rotten and easier to digest.

I almost posted about this subject but the pic of that child almost made me cry and I'm sure all of yinz heard about the story immediately after it happened.

I did post this previous thread about Nile crocodriles, if you think alligator could cause touble wait till they new big guy in the swam takes over.

Burmese python? New top predator in Fl, Nile croc. Can we please have normal pets?

Joining an already robust list of invasive species, Florida researchers have now confirmed that three Nile crocodiles were indeed captured near Miami, and more are probably out there.

According to the Washington Times, University of Florida researchers recently published a report showing DNA testing from three crocs captured back in 2009, 2011 and 2014 are, in fact, Nile crocs.

“They didn’t swim from Africa,” University of Florida herpetologist Kenneth Krysko said to the Times. “But we really don’t know how they got into the wild.”

I guess in Fox News they'll be called "Africanized gators", the A makes them more aggressive and dangerous by nature.

Alligators eat humans.

Fact: Humans have no natural predators. Except...

That said, I've canoed next to alligators in the Hillsborough River in Tampa. They'd much rather run than to eat a human. The one at the zoo probably figured human=food, but upon seizing said baby sandwich, noticed it was different than the food it's normally fed.

I have 2 turtles. Though not quite alligators, their brains are just as small. One hasn't learned that my finger isn't food, but since I'm feeding it, it knows no difference.

Although we aren't usually their natural food source, alligators and crocodiles will eat a human if hungry. Sometimes they'll even attack something even if they are full, but won't necessarily eat it right away or at all.

On a side note....

Sharks on the other hand aren't very fond of the taste of humans. It's primarily why there are so many survival stories.

Except white sharks, we definitively are in their menu list.

That's a misconception fostered because of the movie "Jaws" (and similar types of movies). They don't actively hunt human beings. Is it possible for any animal (including of course, man) to develop a taste for something outside their natural diet... absolutely. But there is no known cases of great whites going after humans specifically for food.

Did you bother to read the article I attached? One case (or a few cases) out of hundreds or more doesn't make all (great white) sharks human hunters. But clearly since you know my job background and can call up random youtube vids to dispute scientific fact, I guess this argument is over.

yes, it's from 2004 isn't it?

I didn't say they were hunters... I said that "shark bites" happen, unfortunately white sharks they keep biting and why not swallow.

I'm out of this thread too.

The most dangerous animal by far has 2 legs. I'll take my chances near a river with hippos, a swamp with gators, a savannah with cape buffalo and lions and just about anywhere else. But don't ask me to walk thru Englewood at night.

I'm sure Inglewood doesn't have shit on a jungle full of rabid Gorillas and Chimpanzees. I'm surprised that one gorilla didn't rip the face off that one kid who fell in the enclosure.

Sometimes they hunt during the day and out of the water breaking all rules.
