Perhaps I'm a little biased, but I LOVE my home of San Francisco. If you haven't been it's a MUST. So beautiful, so much to see, great food, theatre, museums, everything.

I third SF.. after Seaboy.... SF is marvelous. However, SF has it's hot raunchy, kinda seedy, nasty, dirty hot under side that you might like, but one thing SF isn't is tacky. ':)

I would second SF (despite Mark Twain's admonition that Sydney is what San Francisco thinks it is). Many things would draw me back to SF, and Lance is one of them.

I did SF a hundred years ago, but it was during a really cold and rainy spell and I didn't really get a feel for it at all. I packed for sunny CA and ended up buying cords and sweatshirts while there. What's the weather like in May/June?

That's the only thing about SF is the weather is unpredictable, though May & June are often nicer and warmer than July & August. It rarely gets very hot here so packing both shorts and jeans is always advisable.

Santa Monica could fit your bill. A short taxi ride from LAX and once there, you will not need a car. You can walk to numerous places and for "tacky" it fits the bill. An easy stroll to Venice beach where there are body builders and more "tacky" sites. The beach there is beautiful and plenty of "eye candy" is available. Should you want some professional company, LA has a full range of escorts for you. Several times over the years, I have gone there for a weekend and not needed a car. Lots of walking is possible there, especially along the beach and just behind the hotels. You can go to the 3rd Ave open air mall and sit to people watch. Venice Beach is good for people watching as well.

If I were to stay right in LA, would Santa Monica be easily accessible by cab as well? That might fill out the week for me.

I actually looked at NOLA. Are there enough sites of interest and things to do beyond the French Quarter?

YES of course there is tons to do in NoLa outside the quarter. Here some funky things to consider:

  • Do you like the arts? The New Orleans Museum of art is awesome, but even more stunning is the Besthoff Sculpture Garden which is located in City Park. The sculpture garden is surrounded by pines, mossy oaks and magnolia trees & you can check out a myriad of sculptures created by artists from across the world. There is a beautiful lagoon nearby, where you can have a picnic on the grassy area. It can get humid tho, so dress comfortably.
  • Wanna meet wild, crazy people while doing something really different? Check out Insta-gator. It is an alligator conservation facility. It's so much fun.
  • Long Vue is a beautiful house with gardens that sits west of the city. An awesome location for a piece of history and horticulture.

You can also do plantation, swamp & cemetery tours. You can take the electric trolley to the garden district & discover gorgeous gothic type homes. Anne Rice had a home there. Hell, you can even kayak in the bayou!

i know this is a gross generalization but I find Cajun men to be a little trashy, a little quirky, yet the sexiest & spiciest around - not many choices as far as advertising escorts, so you just have to pick them up in bars. Maybe it is the mood that Nawlins puts me in when I visit, but I just let it all hang out & I have a blast. You can literally talk to anyone anywhere for hours. Also, people are cool but not your run-of-the-mill movie star or fashion pretty. Don't forget to have a hurricane (drink) while you walk down the quarter. :)

Yes, it is easily accessible. Uber might be cheaper than taxi.

Easy to spend an entire day there just walking around and on the beach. Great for people watching.

...I like offbeat touristy things, (... tackier, the better), people watching, street photography, architecture, and theater....

Sounds like a Vegas match to me.

Go to this website and pick the theater (shows) that interest you:

www.lvol.com

Then book a hotel center strip to minimize your travel (no car needed)

For $8? you can get a 24hr bus ticket that allows you to ride any city RTC bus. The “Deuce” travels up and down the Strip to the older Downtown section of Las Vegas. Runs 24hrs a day.

When you get to your hotel start signing up for the various casino “Players” cards. They are free and often include some special deals when first issued. They also often get you discounts on show tickets and restaurants.

Definitely a place for people watching.

Amazing (tacky) architecture. Where else can you see the canals of Venice, the New York Skyline, The pyramids of Egypt, The castle of Excalibur, the Coliseum of Rome, the Hofbrau House of Munich and many others within a 4 mile radius?

Lots of different tours. Or do a “ride along” at Exotic Car experience at the Speedway for $99. Very fun!

Have a meal at the top of the Stratosphere. Or pig out at Hash House A Go Go.

And you can always try your luck at the tables - but remember - The Odds ALWAYS favor the House!

If you pick Vegas also pay attention to the now common "resort fees" charged by most hotels.

They are usually not mentioned on the booking sites - but they will be charged.

Hidden fees - a pet peeve.

Scroll down the left side and click on "Resort Fees"

Free internet and a free newspaper only costs $33.60 per day. A virtual bargain!

In order to advise you on where to go, one would need to know more about what you're looking for in a location. Just a relaxing time? Are you a history buff? Architecture your thing? Museums? Fine dining? Scenic vistas? Drinking/partying? Gardens? Depending on what you want, different places would be better. If you are without a car, Santa Monica is one of the last places you want to be. It's quite a cab ride from LAX, and it's also not near any of the metro lines. Getting anywhere, such as WeHo, would be very time consuming, especially for a short visit. I would also strongly disagree that San Francisco has unpredictable weather. It has one of the most predictable weather patterns on the planet (although, of course, one can never predict a specific temperature for any given day). The weather there is almost never hot, and rarely warm (it might be warm in June or September, occasionally early October). Rain is likely in the Winter, somewhat unusual in the Spring and Fall, and guaranteed non-existent in the Summer.

For this particular trip, I need to seriously decompress. Something mindless, quirky and fun. I'll do serious with food , museums etc. at some point later this year (looking at a week in Florence). I know, the no driving thing pretty much limits my options

Can't go wrong with Las Vegas.

Agreed - To Bad the LIBERACE Museum closed -- If tacky and people watching is your gig - No Better

Place on Earth than Vegas. Be sure to take the Duece Bus to the FREEMONT Experience go at night for the great light show

and music -- 3 Blocks Closed off to traffic - all the old Vegas casino's and the >99cent shrimp cocktail is all there!

I recommend Key West for just decompressing and being mindless. April is lovely there. No car needed.

Portland, OR, or Portland, ME?

Since he mentioned the good public transportation, he probably meant the Oregon one. Easy light rail into the city (from the airport) and around. And public transportation is free in the downtown zone.

If you are gay and looking for tacky you can't beat West Hollywood. The trip from LAX to WeHo isn't that far and if you want to visit several different places on the west side of L.A. Uber would work just fine. Also if you want to spend some time doing the cultural thing the Los Angeles County Museum of Art is easily accessible.
