Recently a nouveau maga riche "friend" of mine was chatting with me about his lifestyle. He complained about his wife's shopping habits, which was basically nothing but name brands. And he mentioned they bought a set of fine china that cost in the five digits. I didn't know a modern china table set could even go that high. Do you guys know what brands that can command that type of prices? I would assume those are all hand painted?

I saw some Hermes plates in their stores and they did look nice. I never bothered asking about prices. I would assume Hermes does not make their own porcelain. They probably just contract out with a real porcelain maker, like Versace is made by Rosenthal. Still, a set of plates in the five digits seems a bit crazy...

Royal Copenhagen porcelain is exquisite and very expensive. Their Flora Danica pattern sells for about $6,900 for a 5 piece place setting. Each piece is hand painted with individual flower images. With a sugar bowl costing $7,300, and a gravy boat similarly priced, a service for 8 with serving pieces could run into 6 figures pretty easily

plus all of the serving pieces: platters, sugar bowl, salt & pepper shakers, teapot....

That's a very good point. I am not sure actually. I assume it was just a set of 4 or 5 pieces. If it was something like 20, then he probably wouldn't be making such a big fuss. What is/are the "most" high end and expensive china brands in the world nowadays anyway?

One more brand you could pay that much for is Spode.

(Eating dinner one night at Hotel Le Toiny on St Bart's, I was startled to notice even the toilets, in the public areas at least, bore the Spode label. )

I'm reminded of Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced Bouquet, if you please) on BBC's Keeping Up Appearances who is so proud of her "Royal Doulton porcelain with the hand painted periwinkle flowers.

All of the best high end clothing designers ( Gucci, Fendi, Versace, Vuitton) have tableware too. A plate's a Plate....

I prefer simple, low maintenance, and easy disposal.....

I've heard the ultra rich buy Les Chiens Sans Cerveaux. The more they buy, the more this brand proves itself.

Before looking it up, I thought, Poor dogs without a cervix!
