I react the same way to those kinds of compliments. But remember that the "mirror" can also be distorted. We may be better looking physically than we think and the compliment is therefore sincere.

I was told I'm a good kisser early during my first appointment. There were other things said that I didn't disbelieve but that felt conveniently timed. That one didn't.

Yeah...that damned qualifier. A definite case of a bit too much information. "You look amazing" great.....no one wants the backhanded compliment. The old: "You don't sweat that much for a fat guy" compliment

Two guys have given me compliments that were important. I can still visualize the scene when the first guy said, "I think of you as a friend." More than ten years later, we are still the best of friends, leaning on each other when necessary, and seeing each other at least twice a year, plus emails and texts in between. BTW, he's straight.
