I was scared to carry it to my truck to take it home LOL I was surprised to see how much lighter in color it is compared to other bourbons. Its the 12 year old not the 23. I was talking to my local liquor store owner, he says he has never been able to get any.. This was a sign up that I did at a small chain of liquor stores on Cape Cod last summer. I had to drive 150 miles round trip to get the honor of paying $90 for it.

I do enjoy a bourbon Manhattan (on the rocks) occasionally, usually Makers Mark. If you buy it, then you need to enjoy it. What is life for, but to enjoy.

I did buy it.

I thinking that I may not get past Christmas Eve without opening it. Coming home from a candlelit church service, eat a dinner of the 7 fishes, what a way to celebrate the holiday.

Are you Italian? I'm not, but they're the largest ethnic group where I grew up and where I live now. I've been to an Italian family Christmas Eve dinner or two which features fish only. 7 fishes seems to ring a bell.

I'm not Italian. I'm a 9th generation New Englander. In this political year, my family, as well as most, are immigrants. (take note Republicans) We just got here in 1620. I love, and respect, traditions from all cultures. I borrow them and enjoy them, with my family and friends. That is what we all should be doing.

Perfect way to spend Christmas eve and to wind the year down...Every Christmas I do almost the exactly same thing. After last minute shopping, Christmas eve dinner with friends, I like to end the evening alone, quietly, with Christmas music on, and reflect on my life a little, and take time just to be thankful. I always treat myself to a bottle of this...

I've made it a tradition for myself...

Last night, Christmas Eve, I opened the bottle of Papi and with my son joining me, we each took a glass of Papi and toasted to the Holiday. Today, I put the bottle back into a special place to save until next year. Maybe I have started a tradition. Maybe I will live to use up the whole bottle, (at a 2 oz pour)

We shall see.

Happy Holiday to everyone here on the Forum

So how was it?!?!?!

This is a review site for christ's sake!...and I think Daddy will allow a bourbon review here....

Seriously though, I'd love to know. I love bourbon and I've never been able to get my hands on a Papi...

Well, I live in NYC...so my hands have been on plenty of Papi's....just never the bourbon variety...grin

I like that...and that's quite a nice tradition to have started.

I used a bottle of 4 Rose's Small Batch as a sort of a "control". I thought the Papi smelled more of a soft floral smell, maybe springtime. The 4 Roses was harsh as compared. The Papi was very good. A slight surge of warmth throughout the mouth, that faded to pleasant fireside warmth as I swallowed it. I made the 2 oz pour last for a good half hour or more, sometimes just touching it to my tongue. Overall a very good experience. There is a restaurant near me called Rye & Tyme in Leominster, Mass. They pour all the Papi's. I had the 23 year there and it was very, very smooth. The 12 year that I got is also smooth but not quite as good as the 23 year.

If you have a chance sometime to sample even a flight of small batch bourbons, go for it. You have several bars in NYC that specialize in their bourbon collections. Have you been to any of them? They are on my bucket list.

for you bourbon experts, how does Paddleford Creek line up?....I picked it out at Total Wine to put in my flask on backpacks...seemed middle-of-the road-ish, according to the staff....be honest!.....

I have never tried it, but now that you have listed it, I'll go to the liquor store tomorrow to check for it. If they have it, I'm going to give it a try. Will report back my results.

In France, it's traditional to have a "white dinner" of fish on Christmas Eve, because it's a fast day, and a "red dinner" of meat on Christmas day because it's a feast day. I liked the idea and tried to adopt it, but found it to be a little too much work.

And to finish the trois couleurs theme...I had a "blue dinner"... by myself ;)

I like the fact that you bring a flask backpacking. We are going to get along famously. :D

A great dinner in solitude isn't such a bad thing either - perfectly cooked filet mignon, a great red to go with, scandalous dessert

Lobster tails, mussels, and (cheap) white wine. A li'l chocolate for dessert.

all we each need is a naked waiter who looks like ________________________________ (fill in the blank of your favorite escort)
