BREAKING NEWS: this morning, our Senators are debating the discriminatory Federal Marriage Amendment. That means that as expected, we only have a few short days left before the U. S. Senate votes on one of the most important civil rights issues in recent history.

We CAN win this one. But only if all of us - whether you are brand new to this battle or have been working with us for a long time - continue to fight right up until the vote.

Today:

Call BOTH your Senators, right now, EVEN IF YOU ALREADY HAVE. We must be louder and more persistent than our extreme right-wing opponents. Here is the number:

1-877-762-8762

If the number above is busy, call this number instead: 202-225-3121. OR click here to look up direct lines for your Senators:

Today AND this weekend:

PRINT, COPY, and PUT UP posters in your office, gym, neighborhood, etc. about opposing the Federal Marriage Amendment. HERE'S WHY IT'S SO IMPORTANT: We know that the ultra-conservatives behind the Amendment are using their church services this weekend to preach their shameful agenda - and get people to call their legislators. We cannot let up. Please, take that extra step and fight back. Click here:

Thank you again for all you are doing to stop the Federal Marriage Amendment. You are part of the largest campaign in Human Rights Campaign history - and we will all celebrate our victory together next week.

We're glad you're with us.

Cheryl A. Jacques

Human Rights Campaign President

P.S. (As KY-Top has already mentioned in the other thread) We know that the ultra-conservatives are targeting people in Indiana, Ohio, Louisiana, Alaska, Nebraska, Arkansas, North Dakota, and South Dakota. Do you know anyone in those states? Please reach out to them now! Click here:

The big thing about the target states is that many Conversative Christians have organized pastors to base their Sermons this Sunday upon supporting the Amendment and getting them to contact their Senator Monday Morning. We need to try to balance out the messages that the swing Senators will be receiving.

"President Bush said he was 'troubled' by gay people getting married in San Francisco. He said on important issues like this the people should make the decision, not judges. Unless of course we're choosing a president, then he prefers judges"

one of the things that botthers me is that our democratic party "friends" do not support us us in opposing the FMA. now if the democrats can block judicial appointments with threats of fillibuster, then they can do the same here EXCEPT they will not. it angers me that they want our votes and dollars but will not "walk the walk". why will the democrats not fillibuster the FMA?

the republican domestic policy is full of crap but just like bill clinton's first two years when the democrats controlled congress and delivered nothing to the gay supporters, when push comes to shove, the democrats will not deliver if they come into powere again. fool me once, shame on you; fool me twice, shame on me.

let's face it, neither party will give us the support we seek for legislation for gay marriage, gays openly in the millitary, etc. at least the republicians are honest about it (i find find a silver lining in bush's hate).

The republicans don't have the votes in the House or Senate to pass this thing. They don't have anywhere near enough votes in Senate where even several prominent repubs are against amending the Constitution. We need to be vigilant, I agree, but there won't be an amendment passing this year. It's all just politics at this point because Frist and Delay want to get people on the record.

First only the Senate votes on Constitutional amendments before it goes to the states. Second some Senators are waving. One Democratic Senator, who has supported Gay causes in the past including sponsoring Hate Crime legislation, just told some Gay constituents yesterday that be can't support them on this. But will continue to sponsor bills for them in the future "IF" they will "Allow him". Forgot the Senators name, but he is from Oregon. Folks the pressure is on from the Right.

Actually...

The Amendment Process

There are essentially two ways spelled out in the Constitution for how it can be amended. One has never been used.

The first method is for a bill to pass both halves of the legislature, by a two-thirds majority in each. Once the bill has passed both houses, it goes on to the states. This is the route taken by all current amendments. Because of some long outstanding amendments, such as the 27th, Congress will normally put a time limit (typically seven years) for the bill to be approved as an amendment (for example, see the 21st and 22nd).

So, the amendment needs 2/3 of both the House and the Senate. Then it needs 3/4 of the states to ratify it.

It may be just camoflage to help them pass it with little opposition when they keep telling us that there is no chance they'll get more than 50% of the vote and just want to try to ruin the Democratic slate's chances in the South.

Mrs. Cheney has come out against the FMA.

Any word on what's happening about the ethics charges against Tom DeLay?

"I can almost hear Doug gnashing his teeth and stomping his feet."

Just curious, but WHY do you think Doug69 would have such a reaction?

From all I've seen posted on this board, NO ONE could be accused of less "party spouting bs" than Doug69!

Anyone with a modicum of insight, KNEW that this "proposed amendment" stood a "snow ball's chance in Hell of passing", but that CERTAINLY did not stop others from "shilling" us to send protests, and berating us for not doing so! :(
