Yes, it is unlikely that established escorts will tour small cities. It's too big a risk both financially and safety wise.

My guess is that you would have better chances taking day trips to big cities near you.

the obvious suggestion is to check the "escort travels" subforum here, watch for guys you like planning a visit to DC, and make a mini-vacation out of it (the Smithsonian American History museum is incredible, by the way!)....or visit a dude you like at any time who is based in DC....traveling guys will almost certainly host at their place, so no need for you to even get a hotel!.....

I agree with two previous posters: travel to DC. There are so many escorts in the DC area, and it is only 110 miles.

According to the census, Richmond is at a bit over 200,000 in population. I would consider that medium sized city, I've actually gone to cities with populations of around 60,000 people, and made the same amount or more, and charging more and getting it...than "big" cities...and spending a fraction of the amount to lodge in.

 

I used to see a regular client often in his Midwestern town of about 24,000.

 

So I think it's more of people expecting the big cities to be the only places to go to make a profit. But that's not always true. The only "big" cities that I can say I've gone to that have lived up to its hype, is San Francisco, Boston and D.C. All the rest you go with big dreams only to be disappointed.

 

I think location plays into also. Some states only have 1 city you can really get clients out of (e.g. Colorado). Whereas other states may offer many smaller cities to go to because they may be an attraction to the older/retiree gay clientele (Arizona, Arkansas, California, sometimes Florida when the people aren't busy bullshitting).

I was just in Richmond for 3 days, i always go the first week of December. I never find much to do in Richmond. At one time I would have a guy travel down from DC but the last couple of guys i booked didn't show up so I have since given this plan up. Last year i went to Atlanta for a night before getting to Richmond and this year I spent the night before in NYC. those stops worked out much better than planning something in Richmond.

I live in San Diego, which is the 8th largest US city, and find myself routinely travelling to LA because it draws more visitors than San Diego. To me, it makes sense for the guys to visit LA, as it has a larger population and, therefore, a larger base of potential clients. However, if an escort is looking for a combination work/vacation trip, he might want to consider a smaller city that offers a more relaxing environment than, say, LA or Chicago.

If a city is mid to small, what factors will compensate? My guess:

It would need a good base of somewhat well-paid potential clients who can afford to hire. Also not an overzealous police force - a somewhat liberal city. Maybe has an academic, government, high-tech, or professional business base. Or maybe tourism.

 

I used to travel to Austin often and they had a good cadre of working guys especially for its size.

 

However there may be other factors. Does Portland OR have many 'scorts? Why no hiring there?

You could try asking someone to fly in or out Richmond who is already traveling to DC and offer to front the cost difference. Or you could be flexible with your timing such that guys could line up all their Richmond ducks in a row. But a big problem is that other Richmond clients are traveling to DC, so escorts aren't likely to travel to Richmond to see their Richmond clients if they can already get their Richmond clients to come to them in DC. To add to what Mike said....there may be clients in Richmond, but they may be so cautious to hire locally, and will only do so if they're in D.C. One of the annoying facets of the business. You could be walking next to a client, or be his next door neighbor...but he won't do it in his home town.

Dicky, you mentioned Portland Oregon. That place is just weird. Maybe like Austin, they want to keep it that way. But it's weird in a pagan kinda way. I been curious about going to the Pacific NW again at some point, but theres just not enough incentive for me to get out there right now.

 

From what I've seen and read, Portland seems a lot similar to Denver: High priced, low pay, and slow on the business end of things...add a bit of pot, it gets 500 times slower. So yeah, that's why no hiring.

And that is why I come to Richmond so much! Well, yeah, I come there to see my friends and family too, but my clients are what make it possible and also an absolute pleasure, as there are some really wonderful men in Richmond. It is sad to me when I am there and hear from my clients that there are no quality sex-workers in the entire metro area, which is like a million people. I wish it were a more sex positive environment, but I am delighted by the wonderful men that wait for me to come back to town cause they know the quality of connection that I am gonna bring.

 

I do wish I could get to more small cities, but I don't like to travel as much as many of the guys out there, I just enjoy being home a lot.
