Yo, guys...

I have a bunch of old porn--a few magazines, but mostly DVDs and videos. It dates mostly from the late 90's, so it's not exactly vintage stuff. I want to get rid of it, but hate to just throw it away. Anybody know any gay organization or charity that routinely accepts it, for archives or re-sale? Just curious. I remember a few years back, a big charity drive for old porn...just hoping I can put it to good use, and "share the love." Thanks.:-)

Dunno if they're still doing it, but Gay Chicago Magazine was accepting donations of old porn. They were reselling it to raise money for the planned Gay/Lesbian center in boystown. Perhaps you cna find something like that near you.

In San Francisco, the gay seniors group takes used porn. They have a deal where they offer it to the Gay and Lesbian Historical Association (and archive) which has first refusal on whatever they get. Anything the archive doesn't need for its collection gets sold at the senior group's annual porn garage sale to benefit the organization. When I moved from San Francisco they came over and picked up a good-sized box of stuff I no longer wanted.

The seniors group used to be called G40+ but changed its name not too long ago. You may need to call the GLBT community center to get their latest contact info.

Try your local adult bookstore. They always seem to be buying such material.

I think that any gay historical archive would be glad to have the material. I don't know of any site where you can find a list of the established archives. I don't think that there is a organization for the archives networking with each other, either. But I bet if you email one of them, it would probably have a good guess where the nearest one to you would be. Here in Texas, might I suggest the Gulf Coast Archive of GLBT History? http://www.gcam.org

A Good Use

From your profile on here, I note that you are in New York. Were you in Los Angeles, I would recommend Out of the Closet, which sells everything from furniture and clothes to porn and hard bound literature. It benefits the AIDS Healthcare Foundation. I am not aware of any organization like it in New York, but if you think of a few such as Gay Men's Health Crisis or Heritage of Pride. I recall that there is a gay and lesbian center or there used to be one. Anyone who answers the phone at places such as this might be able to point you in the right direction.

Conversely, there was a business in the West Village on the same block as A Different Light, which is now closed, that sold and bought adult entertainment material. You could always sell what you have and then donate that money to charity. I believe a direct donation of the material for their own resale, if convenient and feasible, would net the charity more money, however.

RE: A Good Use

Is A DIFFERENT LIGHT still open in NY? The one in WEHO buys old mags, but you only get .25 - .40 cents per issue.
