love this vintage stuff.....always intrigued wondering the real-life situations behind these models back then.....wonder if they did the whole "I'm going to make it big in Hollywood" thing and end up doing this stuff as a desperate last resort to get some food

the hands-behind-the-head pose just above in Vol. 9, #3, is a favorite of mine

These photos brought a sentimental tear to my eye, because I used to buy these magazines when they were new, at the newsstands and magazine stores on 42nd Street west of Times Square, before it became "family-friendly." A few years later I even got to meet Bob Mizer, through a friend of mine who was an aspiring pornographer.

I too have fond memories of buying Physique Pictorial at the newsstand on Las Palmas Ave, just off Hollywood Blvd. I was in High School and didn't identify as Gay yet. But I had to buy those magazines.

Many years ago I had a friend from New York in town for a visit, he wanted to see an old friend and his partner. I was in my 20's then and these Gentlemen were in their 70's. They talked about old Hollywood ( they had both worked at Paramount), and produced boxes of photos of nude ( or nearly nude ) young men, some of whom I recognized (George Maharis, Jeffrey Hunter) they said it was quite common for the guys to make a little money, and connections by posing. The evening concluded with some films of young men sword fighting, doing gymnastics, wrestling, and in the case of a buck naked perhaps 20 year old Charlton Heston -dancing.

Hmm? Wonder where Moses was when the lights went out, and who... I mean what... he was doing.

This thread caused me to rummage through my drawers, where I found a dozen copies of other magazines I bought on 42nd Street in the mid to late 1950s, like "Body Beautiful," "Adonis," "Vim," "Tomorrow's Man," and "Popular Man." They are very small format, mostly 4x6 inches or 5x8 inches, and most cost 25 cents. A few have color photos on the covers, but everything else is black and white.

Some of them had names and addresses of the photographers in the back, and one night while I was sharing the mags with my best friend (we were both teenagers), he noticed that one of the photographers lived near us in the New York suburbs. He suggested we go to the house, knock on the door, and say we were interested in buying posing straps (the mags often carried ads for posing straps). We parked on the street near the house, and I stayed in the car while he rang the doorbell, and then disappeared inside the house. I sat there nervously in the dark for 10 minutes, until a man emerged from the door, came over to the car, and said "You better come inside." I followed him into the house, and....well, I suppose what happened next should remain private between me, my friend and the four men in the living room.

I saw these mags here and there and wanted desperately to buy them, but didn't have the nerve. I stole a couple (down the front of my pants) and wore them out in the bathroom. I used to dream that Rock Hudson, George Nader and other movie stars were gay, although I knew they couldn't be. Handsome, famous men werent queer! If only I had known, I would have enjoyed more in the Rock- Doris Day movies than just her costumes.;)

Ah, Rock! He was one gloriously handsome man and was having it off with Nader all the time. Now that would have been a movie to see.
