Small decorative tats are ok, especially if the guy has a meaningful life story behind the art. But many tats covering a large swath of flesh are distracting and unpleasant. That's strictly from a client hiring preference. The libertarian streak in me says yall have at it.

Hi Jawjateck - I see there is longer a link to your blog. Have you discontinued it, in view of 'circumstances'? That would be too bad, I really enjoyed your blog.

Just lowered my visibility for awhile. It's still out there and all of the content. I did turn off the quick link to the most viewed page. So folks have to search and scroll a bit to find what they need.

This subject has been discussed before - I personally hate tattoos and piercings. I can however still look at someone with tattoos, but can't stand to look at piercings. When I look at someone who has tatted themselves up as a form of "self-expression", I just view them as someone who a conformist, jumping on a bandwagon of current fashion. I realize that there is a long human history of various forms of body modification, but widespread acceptance in our current society seems relatively recent.

That's a common view - that tats that "mean something" are OK.

I grew up when tattoos were not the in thing. So I started out hatting them. As I have seen more tattoos I look at them different. The tattoos are a part of the person. If they fit and enhance the body they are fine. If the body is defined by tattoos I find them a little much and repulsive.

I've been fascinated by them since early childhood. I first noticed them on guys operating amusements at fairs and carnivals and my mother explained that people of our class didn't do that sort of thing. But that didn't stop me from being fascinated and more than a little turned on by them.

I find some tattooed guys to be very attractive and others completely unattractive. For me, it depends on the design and whether the guy can carry it off. Today at the supermarket were two similarly-built guys who had similar tattoos: double sleeves and both pecs with part of the pec tattoos visible outside of their tank tops. One guy looked extremely hot and the other looked pretty gross. It depends on the guy.

Face tattoos generally turn me off, as do the rings embedded in a guy's earlobe.

Massive tattooing has been around for quite awhile now like 15+ years. I think the trend is fading among the very young (early 20s). They grew up with adults having lots of tattoos. It's passé. It will take awhile for it to become evident in the population however. That's my guess anyway.

Every time I see a tattooed parent holding a small child I think "Hmm...wonder if you will be upset when your kid doesn't get all tatted up?"

I still believe in 99% of cases tattoos ruin a nice body and give an unnecessary and unattractive thuggish look to a handsome guy.

Example: Christian Wilde, I'd rather see him on a polo shirt!

What exactly do you mean, JJT? When I would go to it, the latest post always showed up first. Currently the vacation announcement is what I see first.

This has been an interesting thread. I agree with most of the negative opinions about tattoos. I feel like there have been previous posts on this topic and the consensus ended up being much more pro-tattoo than this one. Interesting.

I plan on getting the one below my belly button zapped off.

For the record, Killian, I find your tattoo to be more tolerable than most.

I'm curious, however, about the practicality and expense of tattoo removal. Although people often justify their tattoos by saying that the can get them removed if they change their mind, I wonder if this is really more of a myth. I've never seen anyone actually do it. Is it so expensive or time consuming that when people really seriously consider it, they decide not to? Does anyone know? I have to think that for someone like Christian Wilde, shown above, there is no way they could actually be removed.

I don't know all the ins and outs. But it's done by laser. It takes multiple sessions. And I think it makes the skin sore like a sunburn. I think I also read it doesn't work as well on dark-skinned people.

I love tattoos. I'd better, since I have a fair amount of my skin surface covered with them. If somebody rejected me as a sexual partner because of my tats, I would be OK with it, because I understand that they're not for everybody. And in my experience, so many man are attracted to tattooed men that a few who aren't don't make that much difference. Tattoos don't work miracles. But if a man is already attractive, a couple of well-done tattooes can do a lot for his batting average.

Not to be pedantic but only to those who like tattoos. I don't think I've ever thought a tattoo enhanced anyone's looks. In fact it's not that I just dislike the way tattoos look. I think they detract from how handsome a guy is overall. There are guys I think are handsome in spite of their tattoos.

As we all know we are visual people. And seeing big honking tattoos can unfortunately affect our attraction level or even how we feel about someone. It's not right. But I'm sure there are features that for all of us turn us off. Of course if you get to know the guy, lots of times that can ameliorate the tattoos.

And as much as I dislike tattoos and piercings on guys, I dislike them even more on women. I don't like big chunky jewelry on anyone either. I used to wear a mezuzah on a chain in junior high. But where we kept our clothes in PE were shelves of baskets and we used a combination lock at the front end of the basket. The mezuzah either kept slipping through the spaces of the metal basket or someone kept stealing it. That was the last time I wore something routinely around my neck until years later at work when security name tags on lanyards became popular. And initially I wasn't sure how I was going to like wearing that.

Leviticus 19:28: "Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the Lord.” Wonder why the right wing Christians aren't hung up on this biblical passage? Kim Davis would be asking marriage license applicant to strip naked so she could search for tattoos.

I'll also weigh in here against tattoos. Rather than enhance a beautiful man's body, in my opinion tattoos inevitably detract from what nature has provided. I was disappointed to see that Noel, one of my favorite models, succumbed to the ink plaque. And, no matter what is said to the contrary, that tattoo cannot be removed without leaving an obvious remnant behind.

Here's hoping that Curtis, Noel's partner in his latest scene, does not follow suit. Curtis may not have the hottest body on Sean Cody, but he's damned attractive as is with no artificial adornment.

I once worked with a well known actress who had at least a dozen smallish tattoos over her back, legs and arms. She spent about 2 hours every morning in make-up being covered with dark foundation, and her costumes had to be designed so that they covered her ink on camera. I just remember thinking what a stupid thing she had done to her body and how much money it was costing in overtime and extra wardrobe work.

A director friend of mine told me he was once auditioning for a stage production of "Romeo & Juliet". A young man came in to read for Romeo and just blew everybody out of the water. He was handsome, superbly talented and perfect for the role. The part required that he be without a shirt in a couple of scenes and to the despair of everybody, his chest was covered in tattoos of names and slogans, his back had a huge eagle on it, and there was a snake tattoo going around half of his waist. My director friend said he was nearly in tears of disappointment when after many attempted solutions to hide the images failed, they decided they couldn't keep the kid in the role because they just couldn't cover him up enough to fit the Renaissance period in which the production was set. I've often wondered if that young actor ever got hired for anything other than modern day roles requiring his kind of look. Apparently, he was a wonderful, trained classical actor.

It's interesting, the arch tone that people often use when expressing their distaste for tattooes, almost as though they take it as a personal insult that a total stranger elected to modify his appearance by getting tattooed.

I'm a great admirer of well-formed pecs. When the beautiful, natural lines of the masculine form are broken by tattoos, I feel I'm deprived of my desire to admire and appreciate the beauty. So, I'm not insulted by the tattoos, but feel deprived of something that I might otherwise greatly enjoy.
