Hi -

As we all find new avenues to find one another, I just this week sign up with M4RN and paid $600+ last week for a 6 month ad. This morning I changed one word in my ad... the word "Escort" I changed to "Courtesan"... A much classier word I've been told to believe...

They just terminated my account without warning, I can no longer log into my account and it looks like they will be stealing my money. I didn't even know the world "Courtesan" was a bad word. Seems pretty harsh to just close and account without any explanation or a warning or anything. Of course there is no contact number to call and they are not responding to my email requests.

So: Does anyone have a phone number I can call?

Can anyone recommend any recourse?

This does not bode well for this site. There is marketplace opportunity here for them and if this is the type of way they will be conducting business, then they will remain in the second tier of the online advertising business IMHO.

Any help?

Hi Alec,

Yeah, it looks like your choice of the word "Courtesan" is the issue. Following are two definitions I found at Dictionary.com.

courtesan

or courtezan

[kawr-tuh-zuh n, kohr-, kur-]

noun

1.

a prostitute or paramour, especially one associating with noblemen or men of wealth.

courtesan

/ˌkɔːtɪˈzæn/

noun

1.

(esp formerly) a prostitute, or the mistress of a man of rank

Humm if you paid for a 6 month ad, and they are not providing, could you have the charge reversed for failure to provide service?

I completely understand the meaning of the word.... I just question the reasoning of semantics delineation for the use of the word in this context. Seems a bit of a harsh and unwelcoming line to draw. It reminded me why I didn't advertise with them before. No telephone number anyone?

I've never even heard of that. All they had to do was edit it or delete it out. How is that any worse then ...."Men For Rent Now"?

Maybe they should delete themselves to be fair.

Maybe "Geisha" would be better?

Alec, I'm so sad that you had these problems, I hope that they are resolved soon. I have never thought that you were anything other than a complete professional, I only wish that I could be in SoCal more often to meet you.

That's reprehensible. I mean if M4RN thought it was against their terms of service or that it might have gotten them in trouble in light of current events then why in hell (pardon my French)didn't they either edit out the word or suspend the ad temporarily while sending you an email explaining how you should change it.

I appreciate all the help gentleman. No reprieve from whomever runs the business nor second chances.. nor any warnings... just cancelled. At least they said they would refund my money. Guess they don't really want a successful business... especially when so much opportunity seems to exist at this exact moment.. but what do I know. I was just a disposable escort summarily dismissed. :) At least I know you all love me... Hope you all have a great week - Alec

Hi Alec,

Ask them if they'll consider making a deal and going half-way with you and use the word "Escortesan".

Posted

It's good that they've at least agreed to refund your money. Weird they wouldn't just edit it or ask you to do so. Just to be safe, call the bank that issued the credit card you charged the ad to and dispute the charge because they failed to provide the service you paid for. If they do refund your payment, no problem. But if they don't, you'll be protected. You have 60 days from the day your receive your statement with the charge on it to file a dispute, but the sooner the better.

M4RN might be better off to eliminate the narrative part of the ad and just have the various options like height, weight, race, tattoos, piercings, etc. That would eliminate their concern about what someone writes. Less interesting for clients and harder to decide if someone might be good to contact. Glad M4RN will refund the rate paid but it would be more impressive if it just said choose a new screen name and resubmit. Another alternative might be to have ANY change in ad copy subject to review.

Maybe "Geisha" would be better?

The geisha originated in the 18th century in Japan and were originally male. By the 19th century it was primarily a female profession. The geisha population has dropped from 80,000 to about 1,000 in the past hundred years.

Male geisha are very rare today. Eitaro is one of the last. He is sometimes referred to as Guy-sha.

On that note...M4RN just removed all rates, so everyone will read "Contact for rates", which they claim will add "an additional opportunity to directly interact with more potential clients who might otherwise not have contacted you." Not sure if I agree with that but...

Just noticed that too. From this client's perspective, it's the wrong move. Gentlemen must tread carefully in the future while engaging in these delicate negotiations.
