What this escort did, whoever he is, is a terrible thing, and it was done for a stupid reason. Gawker is, in my opinion, even more culpable for publishing this. As a friend of mine who came across this said, "No public interest. Simple cruelty with a side of biphobia."

I feel really uncomfortable with cries for tit-for-tat outing. Pressure Gawker to reveal his identity. At worst, link to this thread so it's clear that we're not entirely sure. If it actually is him, Gawker basically outed him by posting the photo. Really, they're playing both sides here.

This is also borderline blackmail. The federal definition is demanding or receiving money or other valuable thing under threat of informing against any violation of any law. While this probably would be state law blackmail, not federal, the definition is usually similar. The question is whether the influence or other help the escort sought was a valuable thing. If Geithner has no power to help under any stretch of the imagination, what the escort wanted might not have had any value. But Geithner's later response suggests that he might be able to get the escort access, at least.

I understand the desire not to fan this flame anymore, but at this point, Geithner might as well come clean and go after the escort. He's already in the soup.

This is a really important issue and the culpability of both Gawker and the escort is pretty clear for all to see. At the risk of trivialising the main points, the alleged reason that the escort had for challenging the HUD bears some consideration. I have been on the executive committee of a couple of owners' corporations here. Up until a couple of years ago we were free to bar residents from keeping pets (and free to approve them with conditions), but that has changed. The law was changed so that owners'corporations had to have good reasons for denying a request, and now small pets kept inside a residence are virtually impossible to ban. Rules governing guide dogs in the public sphere are almost watertight: regardless of what any other law says about taking a dog anywhere guide dogs are permitted and there are serious penalties for stopping them. Things are more ambiguous for other assistance dogs in general, but I'm certain that any owners' bylaw that banned assistance dogs would be disalloweed by the relevant courts in about 30 seconds.

QTR, the escort did not threaten to reveal the clients' identity if the client would not help him. The escort outed Geithner to Gawker without warning after Geithner cancelled their appointment, ostensibly due to a late flight. (Presumably, the escort realized that the client would disappear and no help on the housing issue would be forthcoming.) The client had pre-paid half the cost of the sessions and the cost of the room and offered to pay the balance by mail.

So it doesn't sound like blackmail to me.

The outing was likely intended to get revenge on Geithner and not for any deeper purpose.

Thanks, FF. The whole thing was so painful to read about that I skimmed it. But the way it unfolded, it seemed to me Geithner got cold feet because the escort knew who he was and was trying to trade on it to get help with his condo problem. The escort was not out money, since he received his deposit and never got on the plane anyway (unless he had a non-refundable ticket). And Geithner seems to be making a connection between the two. What do we make of that?

What do I think? I think this is a terrible setback. Totally violates what everyone, client and escort, values.

Is there anything we can do to find out who this awful person is?

I'm also thinking of this poor wife of the (alleged) client.

She didn't deserve this.

What kind of awful journalist would even participate in such an awful scheme?

I see no evidence that the (alleged) client was anti-gay, harming the community (like an in the closet politician voting against gay rights bills), or acting to harm the escort.

Really folks, is there something we can do?

Well, thinking about the poor wife, she also doesn't deserve to have a husband who is hiring male escorts behind her back, if that is in fact happening. (For all we know, she knows he's sexually interested in men and hires male escorts.) I am frequently puzzled by people thinking that what's unfortunate is a someone finding out that his/her spouse is secretly having sex with other people -- regardless of sexual orientation -- versus what I think is what's really unfortunate, that someone has a spouse who is dishonest about such a large issue. At least give the other person a choice of whether they want to maintain the relationship under the circumstances.

Wow if only that poor guy had searched these forums for Brodie's name in advance. Wouldn't have found one positive word. And for all the hot Rentboy ads there are in Chicago. Sad.

Which brings up an interesting point: there's noting under the reviews for him. Unless one is sophisticated/diligent enough to enter the forum and search for his name, we offer no word of warning.

So if the client were a Republican, a Tea Partyer, or a Mormon, then extortion is a perfectly acceptable course of behavior? Who died and made you judge, jury, and executioner?? I've said it a thousand times on this board, and I'll say it again: liberals live by one and only one principle - "how does this benefit ME?" The common joke amongst conservatives is that if liberals didn't have double standards, they'd have no standards. True to a point, but it misses the point: that today's American liberals are the most grotesquely selfish beings in the history of the human race. They don't care about a single person, thing, cause, or principle outside of their own selfish benefit. Liberals incessantly accuse Republicans of waging a "War On Women," yet when liberal Bill Maher calls Sarah Palin a CUNT on national television, not one single liberal in America was the least bit bothered by it. So apparently, according to liberals, misogyny is a horrible evil, unless of course the subject of the hatred is a conservative, then it's OK. Note that liberals, as always, threw principle out the window, because they only thing they cared about was their selfish benefit.

See, I believe that extortion is wrong, and it doesn't become justified or legitimate just because you disagree with someone's politics. But liberals apparently believe that extortion is only wrong if the victim is "innocent." If the victim is "guilty," that is, if his politics don't march in lockstep with Leftist Groupthink Headquarters, then extortion is okey dokey fine. Yet again, incontrovertible evidence that today's American liberals are the most selfish beings in the history of the human race.

I agree that dishonesty is ultimately quite wrong. I for one strive to be authentic and congruent both internally and externally. I'm certainly not on the DL (down low).

But I think you misinterpreted my comment, "..poor wife...she didn't deserve this". I didnt state specifically why I voiced regret for her situation. But no matter what the case: 1) he is cheating on her on the DL with her unawares (till now) or 2) she gives him a "pass" on occasion to have sex with other men, a marriage arrangement that is atypical and frequently looked down upon by society (not by me- I am not judging, merely stating a fact), it still is tragic that her private life is now all over the internet to which she never consented. Which one is more "unfortunate" lies in the beholder. None of us should insert our personal values or beliefs onto this woman. She can decide for herself what's more unfortunate.

Several things:

1) Take a deep breath

2) I never said extortion is an acceptable course of behavior if the person is Republican, Tea Party, or Morman. Extortion is a federal crime. I most certainly have never supported or urged extortion or criminal behavior as a strategy for anyone or any cause. I mean public outing/shaming. And, I know people in all 3 groups who are certainly not worthy of outing/public shaming. Many.

3) I agree with you: calling someone the "c" word is unacceptable. I was certainly bothered by it.

4) Believe it or not, I'm not a liberal.

5) You might be too caught up in this Liberal vs Conservative issue our country has. Just a thought.

I'm waiting until the dust settles on this one. The reported indiscretions of the high-profile client and the irrational behavior of the escort are too extreme for me to put all my eggs in the Gawker basket right now.

NO it's still there, at least for me. THE ONLY GOOD that may come of this is a final nail in the coffin (let us hope!) to this dickwad's overpriced scorting career!! HE personifies the self hating G4P profile! THIS client is guilty of poor choices in regard to his choice of escort and maintaining his own personal privacy, and nothing more. IF this results in the end of his marriage (and let us hope NOT the loss of family!) and should he decide to live his life openly, I AGREE, BF's will be LINED UP to grab him because I also AGREE the client is cuter than the scort!!

OK boys, let's act on our collective indignation at Gawker for printing such a wretched and merciless family harming article. Contact the ADVERTIZERS and strongly urge them to to STOP advertising on Gawker.

Here is a link to the list of the advertisers with contact information. And yes, I have already contacted some and verbalized my request.

Seems to me that this is only a problem if you feel being gay is still something to be ashamed about. They do this to politicians all the time. Eliot Spitzer, Anthony Weiner, etc and no one boycotts the media.
