Whoa. Who would have thought.

I have this theory. The gay marriage question seems to have a "magic number" associated with it. Sort of similar to a baseball team entering the playoffs. For gay marriage, the more licenses issued and the more marriages performed, the more difficult it will be to put the genie back in the bottle. I can't yet quantify the magic number for gay marriages. If, all of a sudden, three separate states have performed gay weddings, plus those performed years ago in Colorado, then it seems that critical mass shifts to our side.

All of a sudden, the press coverage seems to have increased. Most of the comments I've heard from friends, relatives and so forth are favorable. The images from SF are having a very positive effect on the middle. I read this quote today from an Oklahoma newspaper: "life is short and love is rare". "If someone finds true love, and wants marriage, who has any right to interfere"?

Very, very interesting. I remain hopeful.

Well, BG, looks like just you and me in this one.

This is all quite amazing. These are really momentus events. After thinking this would not happen in my lifetime, or not while I was young enough to really take advantage of it, I'm so shocked seeing it happen I hardly know what to say.

What's next? Affirmative Action for gays?

All I can say is wow.

I continue to be surprised that there isn't more interest here in this subject. I would have expected all gay men, whether in relationships or not, to be passionately interested in this subject.

To me, it's news, it's fascinating, it's a major civil rights story potentially involving all of us as participants, it's a question of tactics, it's something that pits older, more traditional gay activists against younger ones who are less patient... there's a lot going on here.

Oh, well.

Well, while not exactly youthful myself, I'd never jumped on the gay marriage bandwagon because I didn't think there was much to jump on. Over the years, I've been involved in tons of gay activism. Was slightly involved in ACT-UP, have been in numerous demonstrations and marches, go to Pride events and so on and on.

This is and remains very, very exciting. Always figured that if/when I wanted to tie the knot, I'd have to go to Amsterdam. Who knows, maybe a same-sex marriage license is coming soon to the county clerk nearest me!

Oh, trust me. You two are not alone. I still can't exhale!

When it started in SF I figured it was a fluke and it would cause much waiving of sticks but eventually fizzle. I never *dreamed* it would spread. Chicago completely shocked me.

If this holds up, we're living through another Stonewall!

Other Locales

Without naming cities or mayors, CNN and MSNBC both reported this afternoon on Mayor Daley's comments that he "would have no problem" issuing same sex marriage license, that other mayors indicated the same. The quote is from the news anchors, not the Mayor. I do not believe any other muncipality besides New Mexico, is presently doing this but I am sure we will hear of it when it does occur.

Well, I guess this is the perfect time then to let y'alls know that KY_TOP and I will be tying the knot out on Navy Pier on May 5th. Oprah will be conducting the ceremony while Jerry Springer will present us with some evergreens from his show, such as "Sit Down Ho!" and "Go Home Tramp". We're not doing invitations, so just show up.

P.S. We're registered at Crate and Barrel :)

I actually heard Mayor Daley say, in that bumbling way of his, [blockquote]Marriage has been undermined by divorce, so don't tell me about marriage. You're not going to lecture me about marriage. People should look at their own life and look in their own mirror. Marriage has been undermined for a number of years if you look at the facts and figures on it. Don't blame the gay, lesbian, transgender and transsexual community. Please don't blame them for it.[/blockquote]In Richie's mouth, God love him, "gay, lesbian, transgender and transsexual" was mauled to near incomprehensibility.

RE: Shocking But True

No, that's apparently not correct. It's done at the county level, not the state level. Here's an excerpt from an AP article that explains it:

By Associated Press

February 19, 2004, 10:06 AM EST

CHICAGO -- Mayor Richard Daley said he would have "no problem" with Cook County issuing marriage licenses to gay couples in Chicago, the nation's third largest city.

Entering a national debate over gay marriage, Daley urged sympathy for same-sex couples because "they love each other just as much as anyone else."

Daley also dismissed a suggestion Wednesday that marriage between gay couples would undermine the institution.

"Marriage has been undermined by divorce, so don't tell me about marriage," he said. "Don't blame the gay and lesbian, transgender and transsexual community."

Daley said only the county clerk's office can issue marriage licenses, and he stopped short of saying he would follow San Francisco's Mayor Gavin Newsom by approving marriage licenses for same-sex couples.

County Clerk David Orr said he was "game to looking at options," but only if a consensus could be built between Daley, city and county government and advocacy groups.

"I'm fed up with people being discriminated against because of their sexual orientation," Orr said. "(But) whatever you do when it comes to challenging laws, you want it to be effective and not knee-jerk."

Last fall the county board authorized Orr to issue certificates of domestic partnership that carry no legal rights.

Actually, Deej, KY and I have been discussing the Sling and Whimper, but until I rough him up a bit, we will have to settle for place mats and napkin holders. Those country boys are so fragile...

Well from looking at the Travel Section, looks like I'll be left standing at the altar, or should I say Pier, since you will be in Japan on May 5th. Story of my life...jilted again.

Or is that May 5, 2005? Well I'm sure you'll find a much Younger Asian or Aussie man, from your travels, before then to take my place. Oh!!! the pain, jilted yet again.;( (And just as I was making a list for the registry at Sling and Whimper.)

I was thinking on my lovely bus ride home this evening about this marriage stuff and the money. So far there has been about 3,200 marriages in SF. I think if I remember right it costs about $150 if everything is done at the court house. That comes up to $480,000 that the city has made. Then if you take even just a hand full(320 couples) that may have come to the city and say rented a room average night of $100 that comes out to about $72,960. That doesn't count the friends or families that might rent out rooms too not the resteraunt bills, cab fares, trolly fares and such. I personally think that the whole marriage idea is wonderful and am 110% for it but by the end of this good or bad I wonder how much the city as a whole will end up making. Just an idea that I thought I would throw out at y'all.

Hugs,

Greg

I read an article a few days ago, can't remember where, about the positive economic impact the marriages were having in parts of SF. Every one from the florist to bakeries to reception expenses. Weddings can be very expensive and I'm sure many are celebrating in fabulous fashion, as well they should.

Well, I have not been there for a while, but I am sure that by now, they will have built something approximating the hideousness of Navy Pier jutting out into Tokyo Bay. I don't know why anyone would want to replicate something as insipid as Navy Pier, but in a world where there are three Gabor sisters, anything is evidently possible.

Oh, KY...the fact that you still think that any man under forty would even have the slightest chance of dragging me off the streets makes me wonder if you ever listen to me. I clearly must put more effort into showing you my appreciation. You better not make any plans requiring us leaving the hotel room on your next trip to Chicago. :9
