My business is software market research. So a lot of time at the desk researching on the Internet, doing phone interviews of people who use the kind of software I study, writing reports, and hawking my goods & services. Two weeks ago, to bear down and finish a short-deadline consulting project, it occurred to me -- without giving it a lot of thought -- to turn off my Facebook push-email notifications and stop looking at Facebook until this job was done.

I can't believe how much that did for concentration and productivity. I not only wrapped up that work but also finished writing another long report for sale that had been lingering around in fragmentary form for months, wrote the prospectus for it, and started selling. (And taking orders! :) )

[somehow this forum doesn't disrupt my concentration in nearly the same way! Go figure.]

Anyone else profited from swearing off Facebook? Or any other online time-suck?

I never have had to swear off Facebook... I have a Facebook account for one purpose only and that is to preserve my Slotomania winnings... and I'm not addicted to that by any stretch of the imagination. However, I ain't putting my 30 mil in jeopardy!

I ignore all the silly requests to become "friends" and friends is in quotes for a reason...

Makes my life MUCH simpler... and if something important happens I don't need to know about it in real time... and from what I hear most of the things posted are not worth knowing about anyway...

Now this site... This is all about important stuff!

Yes, I agree about the value of a vacation from Facebook. I am retired, but taking college courses. Get a lot more reading done when I ignore Facebook.

I am very glad Facebook exists. It has allowed me to make friendships stronger, especially with people who do not live in the U.S.

One comic element: I became FB friends last week with a student in one of my classes -- that class is now over. I knew he was an actor and lived in Beverly Hills. Nice guy, but not super good looking. I was very wrong about his looks after see his Facebook photos. Wow.

reading this confirms that I'm glad I never joined Facebook....only negative is when friends tell me I would've already known about something that happened if I was on facebook: pictures, a trip they took, some announcement

Several years ago, on the advice of counsel, I shut down FB while I was in litigation with my employer. I subsequently prevailed, but also decided to pack my bags and head east in search of the fountain of youth. In the ensuing few years I was preoccupied with, well just life in general, and completely forgot about FB, and many of my LA friends that I had left behind, however a few weeks ago I received an email that someone was looking for me on FB. I reactivated my account, and was blessed to find old LA friends, co-workers, and neighbors. Life has been good to them, with several bringing children into the world, and several were hurt that I had just sort left my previously life behind....Life goes on, and now keeping in touch from three thousand miles away is only a click away. Everything in moderation I suppose. For now I am thoroughly enjoying seeing and hearing about everyones life.

I would say do it, if it serves you and you genuinely enjoy keeping in touch in this manner. Otherwise, unsubscribe, it's quite simple.

I enjoy facebook. I've accumulated many "friends" whose work and pleasure I simply ignore, and look for the occasional interesting event. Mostly, it's people that I've drawn away from, many ex-workers whom I consider friends.

So I wouldn't give it a complete damnation, but I can certainly understand the time-waster that it can be.

I love Facebook. I spend lots of time on it. I've made some great friends on there from all over the world, wonderful people I'd have never crossed paths with otherwise. I've even had the pleasure of meeting a few of my Facebook friends in person. Sure, it's a time-waster, but what the hell else have I got to do? :p

Rob - I've been "retired" (actually, out on disability) for three years now. I can't find the time to do all the things that I should.

Just look at your life-work schedule, and make sure it's working for you and all the people in your lives. I wish I had.

I have come to the conclusion that when I want to say something to anyone I either text, email, or call and actually speak to the person... depending on what I think would be best... and if possible I try to do it at the moment that I think of it. It gives things a personal touch... Plus, I know how it makes me feel when someone reaches out to me...

So if I am out and about and I want a special person to know what I'm up to I can do so without letting the entire world know that I'm not home so my place can be robbed... And I have heard more than one story about that...

So just my way... but I can see how others might feel the need to share with the world... and I'm sure I'm missing out on reviving special relationships from the past with those with whom I have lost contact.. However, there's a price to pay for everything...

I don't seem to find myself on Facebook very often. I spend endless hours on Tumblr however. I'm kinda addicted and seem to spend hours looking and selecting pics for my site. I feel like I'm playing solitaire or something.....

And we all do appreciate all your time and effort so you are not really playing solitaire at all!:D

I quickly get addicted to games. As a kid I always playing board games and card games. I go onto facebook to play games and the few friends I have, know I do not post very often. I get about 10 messages a day. These are usually pictures of grandchildren, children, dogs. I scan things briefly, waste some time crushing candy or rescuing pets or exchanging words with friends and then I am off. This site takes up more of my time, but I do not feel that it is a foolish investment. This site has allowed me to feel supported in an aspect of my life that is unsupported in every other way. So thanks Daddy

I spend too much time on the net in general, and like you this site has been useful, and more broadly than for discussion of escorts and clients. I actually joined Facebook to see a Defence Force LGBTI group, and followed that with a gay camping group. So using it more broadly came after using it for gay community contact. I don't use it all that much but it has enabled me to catch up with a bunch of people I worked with in the USAF, and some uni friends I'd lost touch with. Because of that, I won't be leaving it, but I do manage to survive if I can't check in for a few days!

As others have implied, there is something very special about Daddy's Forum that something like Facebook can not replicate. There are certain sentiments that I have a dire need to express, and here I can freely express them... Moreover, I am able to express that myriad of feelings to others who can appreciate and understand those feelings... I can't quite imagine having a discussion with my next door neighbor about buying floggers or nipple clamps as I have done in the Fetish Forum. Also, there are very few people with whom I have contact in my daily life with whom I can express my feelings about the operatic musings that I post in the Arts Forum... So on a variety of levels this forum has proven to be a godsend for me... and I am sure many others feel the same way...

So in my book this forum is much better than Facebook... as it satisfies a certain need... A specific need. For many of us it is the only place that we have to express our gay side...

When I discovered the world of escorts many years ago it was the most important event in my life that has helped me to keep my sanity. As such I am grateful for this site as being the single best source of information regarding the hobby that we all share. I have participated in various other sites over the years, but this is now the only one to which I gravitate. Some of the names have changed over the years... and there always seems to be new blood entering into the equation... Yet, there are still quite a number of originals still posting. May the gods keep this plaice going... and keep it strong!

I understand peoples dislike for FB, but I find it a little odd comparing and contrasting this site with FB. I don't see them as even remotely the same, nor do I use them in the same manner, or were they ever intended to be used in the same manner. Just as you would use Twitter differently than you use FB or the MF...... Disclaimer: Speaking for myself, I use FB for family and friends to connect, share stories and photos, and well, socialize on a very different level than I do here. One could never replace the other, and there is certainly room and time in my life for both, those that I connect with on FB, I would never share the same information as I do on this site, but that's just me. I understand those that are not interested in using FB, but to suggest that both serve the same function as a social media outlet is a little puzzling. At any rate, remember, you can always.....

Like me on Facebook and follow me on Twitter...OK that's a joke people

In my posting above I tired to get the point across that this site fills a different need than Facebook. I can post things here that would literally scare the living daylight out of my normal everyday acquaintances. For my situation it is exactly what the doctor ordered... and has proven to be an effective social networking tool as well. As such I have made connections with more than a few outstanding individuals some of whom I have actually met and even get to see periodically. Of course it does not involve as extended a network as Facebook has the potential to provide, but at this stage in my life I have all that I can handle.

If I were retired I might have the time for Facebook. Unfortunately, while it is on the horizon, that is not yet the case. Consequently, as noted I use more traditional methods of keeping in contact with friends and family... tools with which I am presently more comfortable...

BVB is indeed correct... FB and this site are two very different platforms... One will never replace the other. However, since I have no other means of expressing my darkest, deepest, and inner most thoughts... I find this site a godsend... And believe you me I absolutely and desperately need to express that side of my persona!!! Perhaps if it were a different time and a different place... However, I... and I'm sure quite a few others... are trapped in reality...

Now as an addendum... I have no idea how to use Twitter... and at this point don't want to know!!! So I could not even begin a compare and contrast on that one!!!

This is sort of how I would imagine some of my family and friends reactions would be on Facebook, if they saw what we posted in the fetish forum....;)
