HAPPY NEW YEARS!!!!

Best wishes to all of you for 2004!!!!

My black eyed peas

In a large pot saute over med. heat till they are well sweated

2 onions

6cloves of garlic

3 ribs of celery

2 carrots

1 red bell pepper

1 bay leaf

All of these should be finely chopped,if using a food processor(which I do)

chop each seperatly.

Add 6 cups water

Add some ham(on the bone)or a couple of ham hocks(these are optional)

let cook over med.heat for 1 hour

Add two packages(1 lb. each)frozen black eyed peas(or fresh if you have them)-

I don't use the canned ones because the become to mushy

Continue cooking for 40 minutes.

Add salt, fresh black pepper,a good bit of lee and perrins, some tabasco

Chop(by hand)8 green onions and 2 cups fresh parsley and add to the pot of

peas.

Continue cooking for 40 minutes, remove the ham if used and chop the meat, returning meat to pot.

Serve with rice, greens and corn bread

My mother insist that I visit her every New Year's Day for Black eyed peas, cooked cabbage and Jowl Bacon (YUK!). Says it is Bad Luck if I don't eat these things on New Year's Day. Well I did it last New Year's and 2003 was Fantastic Year for me personally, so I guess I'll eat double portions (as I gag) this year.

Is this just a Southern Tradition Y'all?

I think so. I'd never heard of it until I lived in the DC area and had a Southern friend who was absolutely crazed about finding a restaurant for NY Day that served black eyed peas.

Yum Big Guy!

Sounds great. Save some of the "pot likker" from the greens for me.

One thing...anyone using frozen beans on New Years Day is "achin' to go to Hell". Its just not done. grin. Just kidding. Enjoy your meal and I hope everyone here receives in abundance what the "holy trinity" of Southern cooking promises.

I'm in my study, and the black eyed peas, cloves of garlic, and onion are waiting for me to prepare my dish. I'll do it once I let my fingers and brain rest from my computer.

Thanks, Big guy from Pasadena for the recipe. ...sorry that my memory has lapsed inhibiting my remembering your correct cyber name.

A wonderful new year to you! Axiom2001

It must be because I've never heard of it. I don't even think one can find black eyed peas in NYC.

Are substitutions allowed? Maybe I can go to Rawhide or the Eagle and watch a black guy pee. :+

A joyous, spirit filled and most happy new year to us all!

For those of us who, like me, are not the best cooks, there is an easier recipe. Just go to The Black Eyed Pea restaurant. I didn't get and jowl bacon but the peas are free and served with everything and the cabbage is on the menu just for the one day. Or is that chain just a Southern thingy, too?

I believe it is. Haven't seen one since I moved out of Virginia. :-(
