I never butter the bread of a sandwich nor do I ever use ketchup. Mayo (always Best Foods/Hellmann's) goes on one piece of bread and mustard on the other. If I'm eating a cheeseburger in a restaurant the mayo and the mustard go on top of the cheese. If I'm eating a cheeseburger at In-n-Out I add nothing.

I have a good friend who is originally from Chicago. He orders this gawd awful (my opinion) electric green pickle relish from a place in Chicago. He puts it on his hotdogs with mustard, celery salt, and a spicy, though not hot, yellow pepper; calls it a Chicago Dog. Raised in Southern California all I want on my hotdog is deli or yellow mustard and chopped onions. I, with some frequency, treat myself to lunch at COSTCO, a Polish dog (with deli mustard and chopped onion) and a drink for $1.50 – best lunch value around.

Mustard and sauerkraut for me on a hot dog or kielbasa.

... In Wisconsin they even served packets of butter at hospital cafeteria...

My parents, who grew up in Chicago, told me that when margarine was first introduced it was not sold in Wisconsin. I can't recall whether it was banned or simply not sold. Nonetheless, America's Dairyland is serious about their milk-based products.

People still eat white bread, mayo and butter? ;)

I love mine on a wholewheat bread (tartine style) with delicious hummus spread. [/color]

I'm sorry Steven, I'm not clear on what the 'mine' refers to here.

Well Steven we all love the meat different ways. Some of like the old fashioned meat, a few like raw meat (however dangerous and foolish that may be), some like the meat a bit fatty and others like their meat lean and a bit mean and some like the meat to be delivered a bit exotically. One's taste in the meat should not ever be a reason for derision or harassment. For me, I like the meat flavored on one side only, the top, but those who can fully appreciate the meat with flavor from both directions get a wink and a smile from me.
