A colleague recently asked me about meeting guys at the Townhouse Bar, also known for the longest time as God's Waiting Room, where "older" men with a foot in both worlds sit around gawking at younger (and, presumably available) guys/boys on the lookout for next month's rent subsidy. Anyhow, i know i should check it out for myself to verify the facts, but the last time i was there was a few years ago and it was more of a piano bar that had the convivial atmosphere of an old boy's club. No hustlers, as far as i could tell. Anyone else with more recent experiences to share?

I was there last month. It's a nice bar, yes, most of the guys are older, well-dressed, and very nice to chat with. I'm not into the piano bar thing, but it provides a nice calm atmosphere. There's a sports bar type set up below the main bar.. just down the stairs. I didn't see one man "gawking", drooling or anything remotely related to it. There were some young guys there, probably looking for a sugar daddy or help with the rent. I think it's a classy place. I don't think the men gawk at the boys as much as the boys gawk at the men. :)

I'm a long time patron of the Town House, and I would strongly endorse cany's second description above, of his own experience, as well as what countryboywny writes. Indeed, it is "more of a piano bar that [has] the convivial atmosphere of an old boy's club." The management strongly discourages escorts and hustlers, although some who do slip in are so well behaved that it is hardly noticeable. I in fact like escorts and hustlers and wouldn't mind seeing more of them, but that is a management decision and I am sure it is well-founded. TH is in fact quite a pleasant place if you like that sort of thing. I do.

Oh, I forgot to say that while I was there, I stepped outside for a cigarette. I was looking up the street taking in the sights and when I turned back around this cute boy was standing right next to me with a big smile. It startled me a bit.. but I couldn't help but giggle. LOL

Thank you BgMstr4U...i appreciate the info. As someone in his 40s, i'm sure i'll be regarded as part of the "older" crowd and didn't mean to offend anyone with my initial description of the TH denizens. Hope to make it up there someday soon as I love showtunes and it's always a fun place to end up for a nightcap with the boys :)

At the TH, 40 is by no means in the older range. There are a fair number of very attractive younger men who like older men, and it is a mistake to assume they are escorts looking for business. I know of several excellent relationships that have started at the TH.

I have been going to the TH for many years — started there when I was a cute young thing. I agree with the comments about it being a piano bar and not a hustler bar. It is a bar for older gentlemen and other men who like them. If your turn-on is a blazer and a bow tie, the TH is the place to be.

"He followed me home, Mommie! Can I keep him?"

AH, the TownHouse.... I visit NYC twice a year for about a 10 day haul. The reason being that I made really good relationships with guys there as initially the Total Stranger(s). Visited there, for the first time, about 5 years ago. "Virgin Experience": found the TownHouse online and went for a few drinks the first night and enjoyed the no so older and not so younger guys... Hell, I was in my mid 30's. Night two: a gorgeous couple "befriended" me at the front bar and notice me from the night before.... we went to have a bite to eat and ventured to a few clubs with a guy from New England, which none of had ever met before.... the next week was a meeting place for us all. NO DETAILS as to private time! Over the past 5 years, the TownHouse is the place always looking forward to visiting. The friendships and "good times" keep me going back!!!! Personal thought, it is a place to frequent every evening while in NYC and let "chemistry" set the course... doesn't seem to be a one-stop-shop. Enjoy and frequent... happy hunting :-)

Glad to know the Townhouse is still around, and apparently still doing well. When I was going to New York regularly in the 1980s and early 1990s, Rounds, a real hustler bar in approximately the same neighborhood, was my favorite place to hang out.

As I thought about replying in this thread, I realized that Rounds has been closed for about twenty years now. Rounds has been mentioned here before a number of time. To me, it was ideal because you had a change to met guys before deciding whether you wanted to spend the night together or not. I believe it was closed by the city. Wonder how it would have done in the age of the Internet?

I still miss Rounds.

Well Rounds would be square in this era only if the ownership figured out a way to fill a niche to scratch the itch.

I have some wonderful memories of meeting guys at the Townhouse... some older, some younger, some just for a fun evening chat and some that turned into much, much more. It is truly a gentleman's club, but the age range is quite large at least when I have been there. I go there every time I get to NYC, in part, because I love piano bars, and in part because meeting guys there is so very easy, whether they are young or old, and regardless of whether or not you want to make a lot out of the initial meeting. But, I also have to agree with William. I do miss Rounds... I have some fantastic memories of meeting guys at Rounds, and it is a shame that it was closed, but I can understand why, based on the last time I was there before it was closed. I hope Townhouse continues, as I love going there when I am in NYC.

In NYC I never made it either to the Town House or to Rounds, but did in the day occasionally hang out at Stella's. Admittedly Stella's was a bit more edgy and the younger guys there (more often than not very young and ethnically quite a mix) were pretty hot to trot. I actually had more fun lurking outside the bar either across the street or up at the corner near the firehouse that was then there, and waiting for guys who did not score to hit the road, and it was very easy to entice one to come to a very cheap (ok, it was damn seedy) walk-up hotel around the corner for a few hours of play. Some of my best encounters with guys from Latin America (Venezuela, Columbia and Brazil) took place back 15 or so years ago this way.

Unfortunately the more open and exciting ambience of the boy bars in Europe has not been successfully transported to these shores.

The idea of a sophisticated piano bar like Town House interests me, but I would be tempted to bring along a "date" because taking an older escort to a sport's bar is just not my idea of fun; nor would I like to hang him out at a leather or biker bar down in the village for fear he would be stolen from under me. Of course to get him to accompany me to the Town House means dressing up a bit (sort of Wall Street or preppy acting).

I believe Rounds closed within a year after Guiliani became mayor in Jan. 1994, and began to "clean up" the city. I remember visits to Rounds in the spring/summer of that year. There were many fewer people than usual. I was never there when the police visiited, and my memory is hazzy about what people told me about those visits.

Does anyone have more information. In 1993 and before, you could hardly get in the door because of the crowds on a weekend nights, so business had not fallen off before Rudy became mayor.

The word was that there was an influential judge who lived with his wife in the neighborhood. He was not happy with all that activity going on and exerted pressure to have the place closed down.

The memorable STELLA'S definitely the opposite of The Town House for those looking to get laid as opposed to just conversation! ;)

A Fun Nite was The Gaiety Grand Finale on Sat Nite and then STELLA'S for hooking up!

Posted

True, if you really wanted a quick hook-up, you would begin at the GEITY and the meet-and-greet room off to the side; if there was too much competition, you went and hung out at Stella's. I almost never returned to my room alone from Stella's.

Now, though, (sigh) all gone. Even cruising the 42nd Street Bus Station was fruitful for a long time; now that too is gone.

Hello Gentlemen!

Another escort buddy of mine and I went to the TH last autumn because I'd heard the rumors that it was a meeting place for "business". And there was plenty of gawking and drooling flowing our way but nothing more aggressive than that. Some "frequent flyers" of the escort variety flitted in occasionally to check on the market. One Latino hottie with a gorgeous ass in mostly black leather (sticking out like a sore thumb!) zoomed in and out in a flash. My buddy and I left early as I'm sure it gets a tad more aggressive later as the Scotch flows, but we both had received calls and txt's from clients who found us on the webs and didn't get a chance to see if "business" could really be had there. Curious to know if you gentlemen have procured an appointment with someone there, and what where the rates on offer?

Your$,

Mike
