Did anyone experience any moment during the Cleveland abductor's "I'm not a monster" speech, when you had empathy for him?

I didn't watch his speech either, but I tend not to believe monsters when they claim they're not monsters.

Or racists. Or bigots. Or homophobes.

Any time the words "I am not a " come out of your mouth, chances are good you really are one. And everyone but you sees it.

I didn't hear the speech, just heard about the "I am not a monster" bit, and thought to myself "Really? Can you back that up with evidence?"

I had lunch with my sister today and she said he claimed the sex was consensual - was that really part of his speech?

He was delusional but I found myself strangely empathetic for a moment. He had a job, family, talent and friends yet he developed another life, developed an interest in porn and fantasized about younger partners. He violated the law yet considered himself a good person. While none of us could identify with his commitment of these egregious crimes, for a moment I heard a life described which I could somehow understand.

Younger partners? He fantasized about children. Then, instead of getting help or at least redirecting to 18+ women who look young, he decided to act on his fantasies. And it wasn't an act of passion either; you don't kidnap two girls and one woman without spending time planning each one step by step. He knew what pain he'd cause them, and he didn't care.

If that isn't a monster, what is?

I wish him all the ills that might befall a man in prison. Three young lives torn apart not to mention the agony of the families. Hateful and evil. There is no condemnation harsh enough. There is not punishment severe enough. There is not enough time in his life time for him to suffer a tenth of the agony he has caused. Empathy? NO!

None at all. Monsters rarely gaze upon their reflection in the soul's mirror. They continually ignore the warning signs as they step beyond the pale with impunity.

Good riddance. Too bad the death penalty is off the table.

I certainly did not feel any empathy for him.
