My aviation websites are reporting very ugly conditions (read tornadoes) in St. Louis and Oaklahoma City right now.

You ain't just whistling Dixie. A series of storms that stretch from North of Dallas and South of Chicago which are centered on Oklahoma- with Oklahoma City, Moore- where there was devastation recently and Norman. But the watches or maybe warnings stretch to Tulsa, Joplin Mo - which had it's own destructive tornado a few years ago, and St. Louis, Mo.

Is there a fairly consistent 'season' for tornadoes in the Midwest, much as there is for hurricanes in the Caribbean/Florida?

Yes. Most occur in the spring and summer. Wikipedia mentions March through August.

However, they tend to be worst this time of year when the seasons have been changing and the hot and cold air masses haven't stabilized into their summer patterns. Climate change seems to be affecting the areas where they hit most frequently. Kansas used to be tornado central, but in the past few years we've had fewer of them and Oklahoma has borne the brunt recently. The St. Louis area has become another bullseye -- there have have been several bad tornadoes there in the past few years, including the one that did a bang-up job of wrecking the airport. They had one tonight that supposedly hit a motel and a casino in the northern suburbs. Tornadoes also seem to have become more frequent in places that rarely had them, like northern Alabama and parts of Georgia.

There were fewer fatalities in this storm, but at least five and at least 50 injured. There's lots of flooding in OKC thanks to some 7 to 10 inches of rain in a couple of hours. Because it's now dark and the power is out in many areas it's hard to know the extent of the damage. We'll know more when the sun comes up in the morning.

Tornado season started late this year. Usually the 1st occur in March. The weather website gave some explanation of what prevented them forming back in March this year.
