AA announced a new livery yesterday. I believe that have one aircraft already painted. What do you think?

I am not a fan. I feel the American Flag-type design on the tail is too obvious. Might play well in the US but not really a good idea overseas.

BTW, if someone can upload the picture onto the actual thread page, that would be helpful. I am computer-challenged. LOL.

In the above link, no I don't like it, but in today's NYTimes ad in the front section I thought it was quite appealing. Nevertheless, doesn't make up for their HORRIBLE service.

I prefer markings that identify the airline in some way. This is too generic.

The word "American" on the side of the plane doesn't identify American Airlines? :o

Really unimaginative design solution. The type and logo mark look separate and unrelated….the representation of the eagle is so vague and doesn’t reflect the legacy of the brand in any way. And why introduce a second lighter blue, are they merging with Air France? The tail is an 80′s looking attempt at digital representation of the flag (um, last time I looked there were 13 stripes on our flag not 12).

I think the new livery design is fine, but would like to see a new fleet to go with it. MD-80s painted nicely are still old, loud, annoying aircraft.

Also...no to US Airways merger. The resulting company would be one that I'd go out of my way to avoid flying.

Interesting, isn't it, that Southwest Airlines turns a profit and somehow manages to inspire their employees to provide generally great service. I wonder if treating their employees with dignity and respect (rather than forcing pay/benefit and furloughs while senior management gets massive bonuses) has anything to do with that? Nahhh!

Isn't this "livery" an attempt to merge the US Airway's colors and designs and American's??

Actually, if you squint a little whilst looking at the main new logo (in front of where "American" is spelled out), it looks like the old Grehound Bus logo or the current US Postal Service logo. Not good in either case.

BTW, one of the main features of the new livery is that the silver part will actually be painted on. In their current livery, the silver is actually bare polished metal on the fuselage. This is a big change which is partially driven by the fact that newer aircraft have some or lots of composite material in the fuselage which cannot be polished to a shiny finish. Hence the need to now paint the aircraft silver.

American Airlines is known as the "Sky Nazis" for their behind the scenes operations. So, go file Chapter 11, charge all sorts of fees for everything , and spend the money on a new fucking paint job. They deserve to dissolve into oblivion. VIVA AMTRAK!

There aren't many airlines that haven't gone into bankruptcy. Most charge all sort of fees. American isn't much different than the rest.

So true. With the exception of Southwest, all the legacy carriers have gone through bankruptcy at least once including: UA (and CO), DL (and NW), UA, and US. American was just the last hold-out.....and they finally succumbed.

All of this was accurately predicted as far back as 1980, soon after deregulation. The mergers, the bankruptcies, all of it with no more than 5 US flag carriers by now.

Best regards,

Anytime a company makes such a drastic branding change, people are bound to hate it. The same thing happened when Delta last changed its colors and when the new United ditched its traditional design in favor of Continental's livery. Those designs have grown on people over time, and the same may be true of American's. Except in AA's case, the clock is ticking and we might not have time for it to grow on us.

Livery, schmivery, the windows make the logo look like it's been riddled with bullets. At least the name of the airline should stay legible, no?

Hahahahah...I didn't see that at first, but now that you mention it, that's exactly what it looks like. Sort of like someone did a "Drive By"

I think its unfortunate for them to have changed the design of the logo, specifically, this late in the game. The original from '67 by Vignelli's firm is brilliant!

This just in from Adweek

My favorite is this quote from Vignelli "A designer can only be as good as their clients, therefore the new American Airlines identity doesn’t surprise me much," the 81-year-old tastemaker said. “Clients without [a] sense of history could not understand the value of equity. ... It seems to me that there was no need for American Airlines to undertake such a change, but many people do not understand the difference between design and styling, and believe in change for the sake of change.”
