Why does backpage have such a low standing with the members here. Two of the last few hires I have done were with guys that advertised on backpage. I found both guys to be fantastic. What I like most about backpage is the 'freshness' of the ads. On sites like men4rentnow and rentmen, the ads can be stale, inactive, unmonitored. On backpage, I can contact people who are actively seeking clients if I focus on the postings witihin the week.

I personally have never used backpage, but I know several people that do, and they always seem to find those little diamonds in the rough. Are there scams on there and people that are not truthful, absolutely...but that is the same with regular escort sites also. Of all the escorts I have hired the last few years off ads from sites that are perhaps more the norm for people here, I have had my share of misses. Some even came highly recommended by members, and the hire was less than satisfactory. I know someone who hired off backpage just the other day, and scored a real gem.

I am tempted to start trying backpage. Perhaps it would be helpful if those that do use backpage would share some secrets for vetting potential hires, and what specifically do members look for when searching through the ads, and what are automatic red flags.

I'm always on the hunt for undiscovered talent, unfortunately in my area, the bp boys tend to be trouble and/or troubled. Many advertise as thugs or party boys, so I'm not likely to find what I'm looking for in those listings.

There is a certain type of picture I find frequently on backpage- black and white but looks like taken from a model shoot. The ad copy many times for these ads is minimal with nothing saying top, bottom, versatile. Whenever I see them I think those pictures are too good and there is not enough info in the ad- must be a scam. And in several cases, a client has posted after the ad has been up for awhile that the ad is a scam. In several cases I've seen the same ad run on Men4RentNow- ads with pictures too good to be true and with no reviews at all. I have met one or two good guys on BP- but usually in my area the guys that advertise are not my type as one of the other posters already said.

From previous discussions here, it appears that the quality of guys advertising and the success rate of clients here varies quite a bit - and it varies by location.

In my area, most of the ads are for thug-types or 'for females only', often traveling through - but I did recently via Backpage find a hot, muscular guy who loves to deep-throat. :)

It's easier & cheaper to advertise on backpage, so it may attract guys less committed or who just want to give it a try; I don't think you'll find many 'professionals' advertising there.

Hmmmm this is a nice add. Wished he'd posted more pictures.

Always a good idea to google the phone number on Backpage ads, with and without the embedded dashes between area code and exchange:

When I see this kind of diversity among the ads tied to a single phone number I'd love to know what's really going on, but I'm pretty sure it's not going to go as anticipated so I steer clear. Could be a sting, a pimp, a straight couple acting as a hustling team...

I've had a lot of success with Backpage while traveling. You do have to put a lot of thought and work into screening. It can be a great source of inexperienced escorts who don't know the drill and who are less jaded, and willing to give up a lot more intimacy. I'm attracted to some of the thug-types Seeker has noted. I've mentioned before that I've been adventurous/crazy/stupid enough to search for rough trade among the "females only" ads, with wildly inconsistent results. The successes have been so very, very worth the effort though.

Also don't forget that craigslist, which used to be the go-to site before backpage.com, essentially closed shop on escorts because of sex trafficking, child prostitution and serial killers. Sites like that tend to be fertile ground for scum.

I miss the Craigslist erotic section. It reminded me of the old days of the Advocate escort section, Frontiers, The Bay Area reporter. Difficult to screen, but much more variety and a lot more newbies and amateurs.

I never went on CL when the erotic section existed, but I see a LOT of references to "flowers" and embedded dollar signs in the casual encounters ads.

T

I only used the former erotic section to find a sensual massage. Now some guys are starting to also advertise massage services in the therapeutic section which at times will go erotic with more than just a release.

Why does backpage have such a low standing with the members here.

If you look at the number of 411 posts here where one can easily search on the ad’s phone number or pictures, I think many members are just too lazy to do their due diligence by searching or learning to search. They get scammed due to their own negligence, and then they bitch about the site.

CL seemed to devolve into obvious scammers and fly-by-nights and bp seems to have simply taken its place as a venue for these guys. Perhaps, it works better in some cities than others, but I quickly came to the conclusion that it wasn't worth the effort. I'd agree that some intell, like searching on the phone number is a requirement, but i do that with anyone whose unfamiliar. the continuity among pics is another easy step--it's often funny how often they don't seem to conceivably match. And then there are the guys who post old stock modeling pics or pics of still recognizable porn guys.

Also on CL - use the word generous in the search criteria and you'll find any number of working guys.

also just 'gen'.

But in my area, ads tend to get flagged & pulled pretty quickly - I think that varies by location.

Sometimes i see more in the 'Casual encounters' section than 'in men seeking men- again, its not consistent. (In Casual encounters you have to leave 'm4m' in the search box too.

My only hesitation with Craigslist is that whenever you hear about a police arrest, it's almost always involves an ad on Craigslist. For some reason, they seem to target that site. And I think Backpage is the new target. I never understood why, when sites like Rentboy, which are explicit in offering escort services, seem to attract no attention from the authorities.

I'd speculate that when it comes to catching escorts it might be easier to go after the amateurs on Backpage or CL. It's a generalization, but wouldn't many of the Rentboy pros be more cautious of a sting?

When they're going after johns (again speculation) it's easier to post an ad on CL's erotic services section. Also, maybe a cop's ad on Rentboy would be construed as entrapment.

To me the sites in question are more "out there", like picking up hustlers off the street. That's a much easier target for vice.

The only reason backpage hasn't been attacked by nanny-state do-gooders the way CL was attacked is there hasn't been a high profile murder linked to a backpage ad yet. Give them time.

The hypocrisy of nanny-state do-gooders is that they only take action when headlines rub them up (or when they're up for reelection).

  • 1 month later...

Just had my first experience with backpage. I responded to an add from a "Brazilian Adonis" who said he was new to town. We exchanged a few text messages, had a phone conversation and settled on a date and time. The morning of our date (which was supposed to be today) I decided to checkout this site for backpage related experiences and saw a posting from Nvr2thick advising to always google the phone number on a posting. So I did just that and was shocked to see the phone number that was on the add, which was also the number used for my text message exchange and phone conversation with the Brazilian Adonis, appeared on a multitude of adds. A few of the adds featured a guy who maybe, sort-of, could of been the same guy (although tattoos where different or missing). But many of the adds were clearly someone else. There was even a "Shave A Diva" facebook site with a Chicago address and several adds with big chested female escorts. All adds clearly displayed the same phone number.

Needless to say, there was no appointment. So a big thank-you to this site and to Nvr2thick for his advise.

Sometimes I put a backpage ad up. Clients warn me not to use backpage.

"Did you see my ad on backpage?"

"Yes"

"And you called me, right?"

"Yes"

Then the logic would flow that, if done correctly, a backpage ad is just fine. Granted, I have had to deal with (potential) police stings, lots of weirdos, and calls late at night ... so your mileage may vary. I don't use backpage often, but it shouldn't be ruled out. I hate M4RN a whole hell of a lot more than I hate BP, and even THEY are still getting my money.

Backpage is AA baseball plain and simple. One can be wildly entertained at a minor league game and only pay ten bucks for a ticket, 5 bucks to park and 3 bucks for a beer, 2 for a dog, no doubt, BUT it is NOT nor will it EVER be Major League Baseball. Minor league teams all have Big PROSPECTS, has beens and guys who will NEVER make it to the bigs for even a cup of coffee but they do fill out a roster. These are the facts. Rentboy is the National League and Men4rentnow is the American league. adam 4 adam is minor league as is hourboy. Rentmen is like the Japanese leagues. There is GREAT BIG LEAGUE ball played there but very few fans even know it exists so they toil in near obscurity. I promote my ad there because it is BY FAR the best run league of all: http://www.rentmen.com/mikeyusatop
