Have any of you seen the promotional poster for the Broadway musical Urban Cowboy, which opens tomorrow? Sexy Matt Cavenaugh riding that mechanical bull with his shirt open, abs glistening?

Well, save your money and look at the poster! This is probably the weakest cast ever seen in a Broadway musical. It's more dinner theater style. They SCREAM everything.

Poor Matt can't sing very well, but he can ride a bull. Unfortunately, he keeps his shirt buttoned, except for one scene where he hops out of bed in his underwear. He does have an amazingly defined body for a skinny guy. Nice pecs and of course great abs. But you don't get to see him shirtless for very long. And, with the tight jeans, it's clear that he is no bubble butt. They seem to have made a point to be sure the chorus boys do not look better than the star.

On the other hand, I kinda wish I were 25 with a look like that, opening my first Broadway show...sigh.

Mmm...I love a man who can ride a bull (since I'm a Taurus). }(

So that's why I didn't pass that audition! :o

No reason for me to go see it then. x(

Hey Lucky, I guess you didn't like this one. BTW, my ears are still ringing from the high volume... Perhaps if there are any HS teachers out there, this would be a better choice of plays to take the kids to see. Last week I saw "A Day In the Death of Joe Egg", a serious drama. Some dedicated teacher brought her class to see it and, unfortunately, the students just didn't get it. They were actually laughing at the jestures of the young disabled girl and talking throughout the play.

When I saw "Urban Cowboy", I was surprised it had made it this far into previews. The theatre was about 1/2 full and tickets are already available at TKTS for 1/2 price. I think this one will go in the same direction as "Dance of the Vampires".

On a positive note, the acting of Sally Mayes (Aunt Corene) and Leo Burmester (Uncle Bob) was quite good... The talented orchastra plays a large part in this play. They are located in the center of the stage and participate in the action.

RE: Urban Cowboy and the headless BULL

>I agree...even the mechanical bull was boring.

Hey Foxy, I think they got that sad "bull" from rentboy.com, for it too has no head.

RE: Urban Cowboy and the headless BULL

I went to school with Leo Burmeister, and for such a relatively unknown actor, he has had an absolutely amazing career. I am so proud of having known him at one poiht in my life. He's been in Les Miz and that funny movie with Midler and Tomlin as two sets of identical twins, for two things. Seems like he's done smallish roles in five or six Broadway plays. Do you guys in NYC know of him yet or is he one of those great character actors whose face you remember when you see it but the name escapes you?

Urban Cowboy will close tonight (Mar29) after only 4 performances since it opened. The quickest closing in B'way history?

Confidential to Matt C.- Honey, I know you are sad, but come on over and ride my bull. I will make you feel better.)

RE: Urban Cowboy and the headless BULL

Sally Mayes and Leo Burmester got excellent reviews. (The play was trashed. I wasn't too surprised by the clsoing announcement.) He's one of those great character actors, who give one memorable performance after another. Everytime I see him in something, I say to myself: "He's a great actor. I know him from somewhere. Now who is he?" Then I read the Playbill and I say "Oh yeah! He was great in that."

I saw Urban Cowboy in preview -- first week in March. Got orchestra seat (left side) for 1/2 price. It was pretty clear it wouldn't last. There were some good things about the show -- good production values, mainly -- but the big disappointment was the score. Not country enough, and fashionable pulling back from the big songs that people know instead of milking them.

Cavenaugh is good looking, has an adequate voice with strong pipes, but is not a thriller on stage. There were awkwardnesses in the dialogue, and generally it was not tight or bright enough for Broadway. I don't think the production was at fault -- the material was weak to begin with. Too much being made out of too little. The ads led one to expect some flesh. It was NOT a sexy production -- not even in straight terms. 4 performances is about right.

Having said that, I think it is wise to consider seeing shows in preview. A lot of new shows will not make it far, given Broadway economic realities and the current economy. Gypsy with Bernadette Peters will probably make it, but because of her. The Producers and Hairspray, 2 of the 3 best current offerings (the third being Urinetown) are limping.

It might be I think Carrie the musical opened and closed in the same day...I could be wrong but I remember it seemed like it.

RE: Urban Cowboy Revived!

The closing of Urban Cowboy was abruptly reversed last night by its producers. No one would say for how long, but apparently the creative team wanted to play long enough so that Tony Award voters would have a chance to see the show.

Now if they would just restore that scene where Matt is in his undies and the girls pull them off!

In addition to removing Bud's briefs, perhaps the creative minds of this "flop" can inject some real drama to draw a larger audience... For example, Sissy dumps Bud when she finds him having sex with Wes on the mechanical bull... Next, we need an ensemble shower scene, one like "Take Me Out" does so successfully, (several times). Finally, Uncle Bob returns to riding the bull, and instead of dying from lung cancer, he can be thrown off the bull during the competition, while dying, Uncle Bob gives Bud his champion belt buckle, Bud puts it on, and rides that bull, with his shit off, to victory!... Now it's ready to win that Tony... Hope this helps :-)
