I'm tired of trolls.

 

Unfortunately, troll behavior is permitted on this board and tolerated. Sometimes the toleration time is limited. Starting threads and submitting posts to criticize (attack) other members is classic troll behavior. It's been discussed ad nauseum.

 

I participate on other boards, and all of them are tightly moderated. On two, your posts await moderation approval before they get posted. If anyone tried to behave on those boards like some of the trolls who post here, their username would be removed, membership canceled, and in some cases I've seen IP addresses blocked. Of course, the boards I speak of are very popular with thousands of members.

 

This is a very small place in the world of online forums, and for some reason (some say an absurd interpretation of free speech and/or gay rights) the owner tolerates more than would be tolerated elsewhere. Not much has changed on this issue since I joined in 2005. The tone was much worse when Hooboy ran the show, which explains why I did not join prior to 2005. While lurking, I had always found this place to be a cesspool of negativity. No wonder there's a history of so-called meltdowns.

 

There are some members who continually behave like a troll, regardless of how many time-outs they've received. This selfish, self-serving behavior never ends in an environment that tolerates trolls. And then you have other members who enjoy the troll's antics, who find it all so very entertaining. And, even worse, you sometimes find an escort profess his love for the troll. And the "entertaining" ugliness never ends.

 

Some gay guys get a real kick out of cunty behavior. Cunty behavior (I think they call it fish) is what drives the drama on RuPaul's Drag Race. Like it or not, I think it's an UGLY side of our culture.

 

I appreciate your "be closed immediately" sentiment, Axiom. Good luck with that.

Do those boards with thousands of members also have thousands of posters? How long does it take to get something posted? Seems like it could be a time consuming, ponderous and labor intensive situation. Just curious.

My favorite science forum has over one million members. The board has over 21 million posts. Five moderators work the board at all hours. Lots of egos, lots of opinions, lots of intelligence, lots of diversity, lots of humor, and the best advice make for a fun reading experience. I'm continually amazed by their professionalism and their command of user respect.

 

My favorite news/entertainment forum receives 25 million monthly visitors. Posts are delayed for moderation but they seem to go up within an hour, if approved.

 

I blog on the New York Times and their new commenting system is a genius idea. You can become a "Trusted Commenter" and your posts appear immediately. Everyone else's comments are held for review by a moderator.

 

If you have to wait for your post to appear, it is much more difficult to get an instant response. But if you think you have something important to say, millions of readers can vote on your comment, and they can reply to your comment more directly. And it's kind of a thrill when your comment receives an Editor Pick vote.

 

I'm not suggesting a delayed response effort on this board. It can't work on a board this small and with this subject matter. But the buck for board etiquette and troll tolerance starts and stops at the top. Until the owner decides to change, nothing will change around here.

Intent with courtesy can be a double-edged sword. What can be good to protect escorts who wish to engage in political discussions, or post anything that could be perceived as controversial and, hence, bad for business, is a disastrous invitation for abuse by non-escorts. Of course, we've had evidence that escorts can abuse that courtesy, as well.

 

If I were the board owner, I would devise a private, clever way to offer escorts two usernames, and only offer this option to escorts who request it. The owner can be the only person who knows the escort's second username. All other participants would have to accept the rule of one username for every IP address. If you're lucky enough to work on two computers at separate locations, then you might be able to bypass the rules. But if the owner decides to make rules and enforce them, troll behavior wouldn't last very long, no matter how hell-bent a wannabe troll might be.

 

I know it's annoying, but the best way to deal with someone who engages in troll behavior is to ignore the troll. Don't respond to his posts, EVER. I realize it's difficult, especially if a post seems sincere.

 

Trolls are notorious for ruining the forum experience for many users, especially when other members enjoy the ruckus they cause. For me, if a user can't redeem himself from troll behavior, every word he posts will always lack credibility. In other words, his posts are meaningless and a waste of time to read (no matter how sincere some appear to be). Trolls always have a disruption agenda, so for me, their words are meaningless by default.

 

If you want a troll-free board, you have to contact the board owner and express your views.

It would be "interesting" to see "trusted" posters being vetted and also seeing "others" "restricted". That comment is not intended to be about any particular poster but just a general comment.

 

Who knows? Stranger things have happened or so it seems.

You Are right KM, but for me "good ideas" lose their impact when they come in a vitriolic package wrapped in hate and disdain. Every post reeks of a superior attitude and condemnation of ALL things that do not make the "Rockhard Approved" list. There is not a neutral or accepting bone in that guys body. And this has nothing to do with personal bias, or his "veiled" personal attacks. Its more about an impression formed on a presentation.

I know. Sad thing is that 90% of the problems on this entire board eminate from one individual......and I think most people know that. The month's respite over the holidays in Dec/Jan was so nice. The forum was a great place to be and everyone was so happy (well except on the politics forum...and we're never happy there!! LOL). Too bad it didn't last indefinitely.
