The First Gay NYC Hotel has opened "The OUT" on West 42nd St. Not to be confused with "The Chelsea" from Years ago which was actually the First GAY Hotel! ;)

IMHO at $250 a Night "Straights" better be Welcome! ;) or it ain't gonna survive!

Very convenient location for the hotel to be on top of XL and so close to many restaurants. The rates actually look reasonable for a Times Square location. Was this supposed to be the Axel hotel at some point? Or is the Axel elsewhere?

Thanks BG for bringing this to our attention. I just checked out their webpage and like what I see. One of my friends is coming to NY in a few weeks. I'm going to recommend he try this place.

The problem is it really isn't in Time Square, it's way way west past 10th Avenue. Not all that convenient to transportation.

I'd say that's a bit of an exaggeration. There are north-south buses on 9th and 10th Aves., east-west buses on 42nd St., and it's only a two block walk to the IND station at 42nd and 8th. My idea of inconvenient to transportation is someplace like East End Ave. in the 90s.

NY is a walking city, and 42nd is a bustling street and fun to walk down. I would give it a shot... Also there are tons of great restaurants along 9th and 10th Aves.... Don Giovani italian, YUM.

I agree, walking in NYC is a great option and this new hotel is not at the ends of the earth. A short walk to the theater district and pleanty of dining. The 42nd St Crosstown bus (M42) lets you travel east and you can transfer for free to any uptown/downtown bus as well as all subways. Of course, NYC's infamous yellow cabs are always available. A very safe location, the hotel is next door to the police precinct!

$250 a night is not bad at all for a luxury hotel in Manhattan. That will attract hip straights as well as gays, and I'm guessing the place will turn into something like the Gansevoort. The only issue, as mentioned above, is the location; it's on the north end of Hell's Kitchen in what the RE agents now call MiMa. The nearest subway line is two long e/w blocks away (I've walked them many times), and lots of people find buses too slow. That's probably why they market it as a self-contained "resort" hotel.

It's a six minute walk, not bad at all, but I can crawl on my tongue faster than the bus moves.

When I saw the current $250.00 per night, my mind stated that that is EXPENSIVE. But, I had completely FORGOTTEN that this hotel is located in New York City, and that rate is indeed quite

reasonable for newness as well as "luxury." I have yet to go and peruse the webite to see what "The Out Hotel" is all about! -:) -:) -:)

Yeah, for a Manhattan hotel, even on 42nd & 10th, it's quite reasonably priced. Heck, the nearby boringisimo Comfort Inn is $199/night! I'm sure the OUT is lots more fun, for gay and straight alike (but probably more so for gay, let's be honest). My only apprehension about staying there would be the nightclub. The nightclubs in Las Vegas are cash cows for the casino-hotels, but the hotel guests with rooms near the clubs often complain about the booming music late into the night. If anyone ends up staying there, please report back if thundering bass is rockin' the place into the wee hours.

The OUT Hotel has a "coming out special" of $152 for a week night rate. Certainly not pricey for NYC.

I'm guessing catching the "Cumming Out Special" may be a good opportunity while the Mattresses are Fresh! ;)

True NYer's would never take the M42 crosstown realizing that it is very slow. Tourists however gleefully jump on without a Metrocard and a perplexed look on their faces when asked to insert card or coins(!) into the box! Of course, they come armed with a 1,000 questions about how to get here and there distracting the driver. LMAO

Eventually the No7 train will be extended westward and perhaps into NJ, so a crosstown train will someday be available.

Sure, it's more fun for gays, but there are plenty of straights, especially groups of woman, who would be happy to live in a nice hotel for $250/night. Price is a big factor to that demographic. I predict the number of straights will be just enough to irritate those who are there to cruise, and they'll have to figure out some way to segregate without attracting the attention of the NY Post.

Another issue: They are, of course, missing out on the business market--the huge market of married and/or closeted businessmen who would LOVE to stay here (probably in the $$$ suites) when visiting midtown investment banks and law firms. These folks are not going to want the name "Out" on their receipts. Subtler marketing that signaled gayness without saying it could have gotten them. But I'm sure the owners considered that and figured that those traveling for pleasure were enough of a market to keep the lights on.
