Hey all you guys that are thinking of visiting New York to see Rick, the Gaiety, and the other monuments, try Priceline. My friends arriving January 1 bid $85 for five nights. They are staying at the New York Hilton, which ain't too shabby, and is close to the Gaiety.

That is good. I usually go for hotwire.com first, because you get a fixed price (albeit no hotel name). Their best for that time period at this time is $95 for a 3* in the "Midtown-East" neighborhood. All others are over $100. I had somewhat given up on priceline because each time I bid on priceline after getting a quote on hotwire, I didn't come up with anything better, but I guess I should resume my old strategy of getting a firm quote on hotwire first, then moving to priceline...

You wanna know how to get the best deals and learn how to work Priceline?

The caveat is it works like this joint....you share your information. Only thing is, like us, the moderators do not tolerate people calling each other names and they do not hesitate in editing; if you think I am a bitch, wait till you deal with Sheryl, the site owner. Actually, she's just very serious about what she does and people judge her by that, which is a shame. I think she does a great job and offers a wonderful service.

Bottom line, I stay in only 4 and 5 star hotels around the world for under $100...always. In New York it is not unusual to get an $85 per night rate in outstanding hotels. Use their services, provide feedback for others and keep the site alive if you use them.

This month, probably because of the problems I had in Hong Kong, this site has suffered greatly financially because free sites like this really depend on sponsor support from the users.

I also have Ebay tricks, but I'm not sharing those.:p

Thanks Lucky for the info. After last night's round of postings I have decided that a trip to NY is just what I need.

The Monuments I am interested in seeing are (in no particular order):

LUCKY, Jim (btmstudnyc),Rick Munroe, and a few others to be decided after balancing the check book.

NY Men,

I will come to NY at the end of Jan. or end of Feb. It'll be spring by then right and the weather will be warm? I mean it tho, I will be there. It's for you guys to decide which month and I'll buy my ticket. Would love some advice about a place to stay. Maybe I'll try to make arrangements to stay 5 to 7 days. We'll do the Hooboy gathering, I'll get to meet some great posters from this board who have become my support group. Gaiety sounds good. I have never been to a place like that. Someone can give me advice about places to see. The last time I was in New York was right before they covered the Lady with scaffolding to give her a makeover. Did all the tourist stuff but got real sick so the day I climbed her I was running a fever of 103. Missed the Empire State building and of course the now departed Top of the World restaurant. I read Hooboy's post today about the priceline tips site and went, registered and then tried to make sense of it. I am overwhelmed, so one of you has to help me set up a decent affordable place to sleep (port authority building or something). Anyway, we can really have a blast. I am excited all ready. And Jim, please be sure that "one size fits all" butt is on hand. Lucky, you seem to be the one who is in town, so guess the ball's are in your court (excuse the expression). Let me know...Jan. or Feb..

hey Lucky,

Those rooms with Priceline/Hilton for $85 seem to have dried up. I am coming Dec 30 to Jan 2, and wasn't able to get the above. However got 2 star for $116. Suppose hotels are fully booked for New Years.

Happy Holidays...

Actually in nyc until jan 10... with other days at friends' place.

Hmmm. You could have gotten a 3 star for less at hotwire. I'll take it that one can often get deals on priceline which are better than those on hotwire, but it doesn't make any sense to me to put up a priceline bid without checking out hotwire first. An advantage of priceline, in addition to getting a firm price, is that they tell you not only how many stars, but also what amenities the hotel has. For example, they'll tell you if there's a fitness center/exercise room, swimming pool, breakfast included, parking, whether the rooms are suites, whether the hotel's a boutique hotel, and so forth. Sometimes you can guess the hotel from the information. They like to use the Hilton/Doubletree/Embassy Suites family a lot (but I've even been assigned to independents). Try to stay with at least 3 stars.

Oops. I meant to say that this was an advantage for hotwire.

Best way to use priceline?

I've been frustrated in my attempts to use priceline in the past in that I haven't been able to get better deals than on hotwire. I'm not sure if the reason is that I tend to make my reservations several weeks ahead of time? Does Priceline work best for last-minute travel? After reading this thread, I tried to put in a bid $10 below the best deal on hotwire after reading the latest deals on the link provided by HB. They came back and turned down my offer, and said I couldn't bid for another 3 days. But the hotel reservation was for the 2nd week of February. Have people had good experiences trying to make reservations more than a couple of weeks in advance?

RE: Best way to use priceline?

You did not read the FAQ. Or if you did, you did not fully understand it. Don't worry, it took me a few times, too.

This is what is important....You get free bids! You do not necessarily have to wait 72 hours. Read it again and again. It took me a few tries to get it down right and a couple of spankings from Sheryl. But don't thank her for the spanking. I've seen others who did and she had a house fall on them.

I have shared this site with only a few...very few people....and they all swear by it. Knowledge is power, ya know and this joint fills you with knowledge, but don't think you can do it in a couple of minutes. It takes time, research, taking notes, shopping about, reading the FAQ, planning your strategy and then going for it.

Sometimes (most of the time) I get impatient and I bid too high and get my bid, but then Sheryl spanks me. I dunno, maybe I have this thing about a Dominatrix.

I tried on hotwire.... on Monday, dec 23, there were no good deals. All hotels in Manhattan 2-3-4 stars were in excess of $200. My stay is Dec 30-31 and jan 1. The killer is the dec 31 night.

I always check the hotwire rates for hotel, and then go to priceline. Then I know the rate level hotels are dumping rooms at.

In SF... hotwire will have a 4 star downtown hotel for 98.00. It is always the Hilton, which is nice. The Hilton web site will sell the room for 139-159.

I prefer not to book with hotwire... booked a 4 star hotel at LAX airport area for 70.00. It was the Hilton.... one of hte worst properties in their chain. I emailed and called to complain about their rating of 4 stars. They only said thanks for feedback...

Follow Hoo's advice go to http://www.biddingfortravel.com and read the FAQ several times. This website WILL explain all you need to know to use priceline. I found this site after using priceline many times and I still learned alot from it. I swear by priceline and love the service they provide. I've saved THOUSANDS of $$ using priceline and I ONLY use them about 10 times a year on average.

Note to those comparing hotwire to priceline, hotwire almost always rate hotels a star level ABOVE priceline, making you think you got a better deal than priceline.

RE:Can anybody produce a Producers ticket?

Hey New York Buddies,

Sitting here planning my trip to the Hooville gathering for the end of February. Are tickets to THE PRODUCERS impossible to get? Would love to see the show while I am in town. Any chances or are they still SRO? I am also still looking for a couch or park bench to sleep on. Jim (btmstudnyc) is mad at me and won't let me stay with him. He says I cost too much.

RE: Best way to use priceline?

Listen to HB... he knows of what he speaks.

some of my deals:

Vancouver 4th of July week: 3* Hyatt Rengency $35/$40 per day.

(Now 4* -- they threw a robe in the closet.

Montreal, Delta various holiday weekends $40/day

Boston various occasions: 4*'s @ $85/day 3*@ $50/day

The only way I shop anymore. Failures are infrequent but do happen, like the night before the Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston when you need a bank loan for a room.

When something is available at Priceline it always beats Hotwire, in my experience-- your mileage may vary.

One Happy Priceline Camper -- Thanks to Hoo. }(

RE:Can anybody produce a Producers ticket?

Jack, I just saw "The Producers" last week. I called the box office (about a month ago) and got great seats, 5th row center orchastra. The show has an outstanding cast and the production is excellent. You should have no trouble getting seats as long as you call now. Feb. (other than Presidents' week) is a good time to visit the City...Jim is right about "Hair Spray" it's the hot show right now. "Mamma Mia" is another show worth seeing. ALSO, keep in mind that there is a "day of" 1/2 price ticket booth on Broadway at 47th St. Tickets for the above shows are not available yet, but many of the long running shows are. I got 1/2 price tickets to see "Urinetown", it wasn't my type of play, but Dan Dare thought it was grrrrreat! Go figure. If I can be of any help with phone numbers, discounts, or checking out a hotel for you, please let me know. Looking forward to seeing you in Feb., you'll finally get to meet the cast of board members who attend the Gaiety. I had a wonderful time hanging out with Luso and Lucky last night. Both are extremely handsome men who should be on that stage. Then I'd really have something to write about! :+ Coop
