So rumor has it that Paula Deen will soon announce her Diabetes diagnosis. Apparently, she received the news some time ago while her advisors have been scrambling, trying to figure out what to do with her career as the sugar/butter queen.

I hope she comes clean. She owes her fans some honesty. Her cooking is a menace to society. And her cackle laugh does nothing to soften the blow of damage that her high sugar/high fat diet will cause.

Every time I see her cook, I say, "She's got to be kidding."

She isnt shovelling the food down OUR throats, just giving us "less healthy" options, that sure taste yummy...

We make our own decisions. She doesnt HIDE the ingredients, and any person living on this planet knows about the effects of sugar and butter

on our bodies and health. Enuf has been written about it. I am not in favor of any form of Censorship.

Paula, keep giving us those Recipes, and DONT leave out the Bacon....

I agree with JJK. Paula has been extremely successful by giving us fun Southern style cooking. Use it if you want or don't, but the recipes and presentation are delicious and fun on occasion. Are we going to go after Julia Child now? Those cream dishes she was famous for were not exactly nutritious.

I hope this diabetes scare works out well for her. By the way, I am borderline diabetic, and diet is only ONE of the causes of diabetes

You gotta be totally out of it not to know something like Paula's Lady's Brunch Burger isn't all that healthy. The dish is made with glazed doughnuts, bacon, beef and a fried egg. It does look good but I wouldn't make a regular meal of it that often.

As I recently discussed with my endocrinologist who declared me free of diabetes after 7 long years, it's not a matter of what you eat so much as it is a matter of HOW MUCH you eat. You've gotta burn what you eat or your body will start to do improper things with the excess - high cholesterol, high blood sugar, high blood pressure, etc, etc.

No one puts a gun to our head and forces us to eat unhealthy food !

You're right. But you can eat 'unhealthy' food in small quantities, too.

I once went to Harrah's and ate at MS. Paula's venue of her recipes. I could hardly manage to find something I was willing to eat. There seemed to be a "secret ingredient" that was used that gave an off taste to much of the food offered. I found a few things to eat and left, so far, never to return.

I wish her personally no ill will but am not a fan of her food. I certainly do not need the calories, fat or "off taste" of her recipes. :(

Best regards,

KMEM

The glazed donut as a hamburger bun wasn't originated by Paula Deen. Krispy Kreme has been pushing the idea for years.

She also didn't invent fried chicken, but people lambast her for showing people how it's done (or how to do it well).

You'd probably have dietary problems if you exclusively ate recipes put out by *any* celebrity chef. Ina Garten's Lobster Bisque is delightful, but not for every day of the year.

If you generally eat sensibly, an occasional splurge won't kill you. Don't shoot the messenger.

To share or not to share?

I don't know what to say about guns to the head and censorship, other than I think those comments are silly.

The aspect of this rumor that I find most fascinating is that Paula Deen built a business empire based on high fat and tons of sugar recipes. Her wealth is heavily invested in those two products. The core of her business (and her shtick) may be threatened now that she may reveal her diabetes diagnosis. How on earth can she "promote" such unhealthy food now that she will no longer be able to eat it herself (if she wants to live).

I know it's a stretch, but it's sort of like a porn star coming out as hiv+ at the height of his career, except that millions of dollars are at stake. In order for her business to survive, Paula Deen may have to switch gears and try to cater to a completely new audience, possibly the diabetic audience, and dream up some new shtick. To make these changes, the risk of being accepted in the marketplace is substantial. There's no guarantee she will be able to maintain her popularity or come up with great tasting recipes for the diabetic masses.

And of course I wonder if the diagnosis was about to be leaked. An argument could be made in her case, because the financial stakes are so high, that keeping this private information private would be the best thing for her business. If you don't have to, why go public?

If this newspaper article is accurate, she'll address this on Tuesday. The new rumor in the article is that she will endorse a diabetes medication.

I am sure Paula knows what she is doing reagrding her image and career, and has received advice from many a knowledgeable advisor. Why worry about her career or her wealth if SHE isnt?

And WHY judge her ? Thats the problem with our society, too manny people are too quick to judge. Based on HER lifestyle, her medical condition is no surprise, while some of it could also be contributed to hereditary. Leave the woman alone....

While I like those ingredients alone, that combo would make me throw up.

I am sorry to say this, but I DETEST Paula Deen and everything she stands for. People like that are a menace to society. If you show 'stuff' like that - I can't even bring myself to call it 'food' - there will be naive and innocent people following her recommendations, and ruining their health in the process. Doesn't she have ANY sense of responsibility? If I ever see her 'live', I promise you I will be verbally abusive with her and cuss her out beyond imagination.

Baron, I think you probably have anger issues?. The state of the economy and food prices usually are what helps people decide what they will purchase, not so much endorsements. Hell, look at all the households that purchase Ramen Noodles, and THAT is the worst shit you can ingest. Its simply a cup of SALT.

gee, I like irony as much as anybody, but it is possible to OD. So on a board that discusses and even celebrates escorting, porn, and strippers, people are actually condemning Paula Dean?? Wow.

Even an 8-year-old can figure out that Ms. Dean's recipes are not the healthiest. It's up to adults to make their own choices and up to parents to make choices for their families. We can live in a society where the elites decide what is acceptable and what isn't, in which case escorting/porn/strippers would be banned looooooong before butter pies. Or we can live in a society in which people accept personal responsibility but are free to make choices others disapprove of.

Hmmm, the next time I have dinner with an escort, I think I'll order butter pie for dessert ... yummy!

I didn't know who she was. so I looked her up on Wikipedia. It looks like she just became eligible for Medicare this month. Now, that's good timing.

I am from the south, have been to Savannah, eaten at her restaurant Lady & Sons, met her in person, own one of her cookbooks, watched her on TV, and even made a recipe or two of hers. She is a savvy business woman who worked very hard at a business she grew from the trenches up while raising two kids on her own. She struggled and had the business acumen to find a well served niche suitable to her talents from which she has prospered, and by and large has remained true to what she knows, what she doesn't, and from where she has come. I do tend to think her schtick is a bit thick, but her personality is sincere. Does she make food that is high in fat and calories? Yes, and so does McDonald's. Just like every restuarant and chef, she offers advice on cooking and recipe ideas. She nor anyone else forces what we should do, put in our mouths, and how we care for our bodies. We are responsible for that. With whatever decision her announcement brings tomorrow, I am sure she will continue with what she does best, still loved by fans or ridiculed by detractors.

I hadn't heard of this lady until this thread but the discussion here reflects the problem with the average North American diet. Too much fat and too much sugar (also too much salt). Too much restaurant eating, especially fast food, too large portions, too many snacks, too little fibre, too little balance, too little moderation, I could go on. But you just need to look at the stats and look at the pics. Americans are by and large too fat. It's going to lead to major medical issues and early death for many.

Europe may be in a financial mess but their citizens generally look much healthier and generally eat much healthier than Americans. It's interesting that the political elite in the US don't look anything like the average citizen. Looking at the Republican candidates, the only one who looks a little overfed is Newt. The only recent President who had a fat issue was Clinton, and he was from the south. But then Carter was too and he never was overweight. And Clinton had the clogged arteries episode. Diet does count!
