It is NOT a good deal. it's outdated, overpriced, missing CD.DVD, Burner, small hard drive and no OS. Also, this is a P3 and a discontinued model :) .

You know, I kind of realized that after I posted it & actually read the full ad but it was too late & we can't delete posts! Uggh. I think I'll just stick with the internet cafe. Ignore this thread. :+

This laptop is more than enough horsepower for casual use in hotel rooms. The price is OK and not a concern.

Now for reality.

1. Laptops are not as easily upgraded as desktops. Don't expect to add a lot of "bells and whistles" without paying through the nose.

2. The video card only has 8 megs of memory. This is acceptable but not optimal.

3. The system has 128 meg of ram. This is enough for Windows 98. If you're going to use a better operating system, you really need more ram which could be very pricy.

4. Unless you pay for a high speed connection in hotel rooms, don't plan on getting quality internet service. Most hotel rooms using dial-up service only connects at a baud rate of about 2400. You can't do major surfing with these kinds of limitations.

I'm certainly not an expert or a techno-nerd. Perhaps others can give you more exact info. But, if I wanted a laptop for casual use, I'd probably consider this one.

Rick, the computer you asked about is not the type of laptop I'd consider using at home or as my "main" computer. I'd use it strictly for travel and remote access. You don't need a whole lot of computer for this type of use. You could probably live without the DVD.

However, if this laptop does NOT have a CD reader you could be in trouble. Most software programs load from CDs and a laptop without a CD reader is very limited.

The small hard drive is still enough for basics. But don't fool yourself into thinking that you can "mirror" your home computer on this laptop.

In my opinion, this machine meets my criteria of a "casual use" machine and is "cheap" compared to current models. Huey has given you great links to laptops that could "mirror" your home computer. But, do you really need that much horsepower for 2-3 days per month?

I tend to purchase old technology at cheap rates. I don't want to pay top dollar for something that will be "old technology" in 6 months.

No, not at all. It's really just for what I said: emailing & internet surfing when I'm away from home. I don't need to mirror or replace my desktop yet. I just want something cheap that will do the trick (so I can do mine). :+

The Dell you posted about is probably adequate for your needs. You already realize there's no OS so you'll have to add another hundred or so for Windows.

I actually know that machine. I'm using a Dell Latitude (a more recent one ;-)) to type this. Latitudes are good, reliable machines.

The Sony Huey posted about is a fabulous machine but WAAAAYYYY overkill for your needs. (I wouldn't mind having one if anyone is making their Christmas list. }( )

Before you go shopping on E-bay, though, check out the Dell website. They often have refurbished returns that are perfectly serviceable and are available for a fraction of the price. They're usually things that were returned because they have a scratch on the case or something, and come with full warranty.

Cool, you came through for me again, deej. Someday soon, I'll have to make you cum in other ways. }(

Oh yeah...me too. I often read about escorts getting extravagant gifts from clients but I never get anything like that. I wonder what their secret is. Acting needy & pathetic? Oh, poor me. :p

The best gift a client has ever given me is a bottle of wine or champagne. When they ask me what I need, I always feel awkward. The most generous gift I have ever received was a gift certificate to Circuit City after a client kept offering to buy me a DVD player and I kept resisting, once even returning a wrapped box with a DVD player inside.

When he last handed me my fee, as is his usual custom, he gave me a sealed envelope with a card inside, within which was my payment AND the certificate. Since he lives in Northern California, I am unable to return it to him until I see him again.

Lap Tops

Some excellent points, albeit the following:

The Apple lap top I recently purchased was nearly $2,000 and the one thing that has not been taken into account here is that Rick and Derek would mostly likely be sharing the machine and it could get an extensive amount of use, even on short term travel. In addition, just from looking at their Escort Travel posts, they do tend to travel a lot and for long trips. They will be in San Francisco for nearly two weeks, they traveling from Manhattan to Southern and Northern California as well as other points in between or nearby this year, as well as other places they have traveled.

During one week in San Francisco, I had my lap top with me and used it non-stop. I only had dial up service with the hotel and the hotel had a trunk line, but this is something I take into account when traveling. Ideally, hotels as the Rio, which I stayed in for one night in Las Vegas this week before meeting my overnight client at the Bellagio, which offered always on ethernet internet access, are ideal. In fact, I was surprised that the Rio, a nice all suites, off strip resort had ethernet phone lines and the Bellagio only offered a data port.

Rick and Derek often do what I do, stay in three star and four star hotels. While not all of them offer ethnet connection, most do reliable connections. I have had no problem remaining connected 75% of the time I have been on a dial up service and, except when I was out in the remote areas of the Columbia Gorge in Oregon, I have no had problem with my internet provider, Earthlink.

I think any escort who travels should have a lap top with an ethernet connection, at least 700 of mhz of processor speed, at least 12 and preferably 20 or more gigs of hard drive memory, an operating system the escort knows and is comfortable with, which is compatible with their desktop model, and preferably two or more USB ports or the ability to be adapted for more than one USB port. In my case, I use a port for a mobile optical mouse with a retractable cord. My lap top also has a very comfortable key board and a very nice active matrix display. These last few items were specifically geared for my own needs.

As Rick does a great deal of typing, both here and in responding to emails, he may also enjoy both the optical mouse and a comfortable keyboard.

I also agree strongly with Deej, the Dell models are very reasonable and after looking at both refurbished models from computer vendors and retailers and old lap tops from private parties, I ultimately decided to spend the money on a brand new machine.

An IBook model similar to mine, with comparable Ram, can now be purchased for $1,499. Rick and Derek can find a factory new Windows XP lap top, sufficiently comparable, for about $1K, and I think the extra $300 or so would be well worth the investment.

Good luck, guys!

I'm stuffed. Too much pie! I bowed out of the yearly Ross family card game & am playing on my mother-in-law's computer. My niece is nearby watching some lame cartoon show and she's mesmerized so I have no fear that she'll see what site I'm on (at?). Anyway, on to the topic at hand:

>the one thing that has not been taken into account here is

>that Rick and Derek would mostly likely be sharing the machine

>and it could get an extensive amount of use

He don't know us vewy well, do he? :p Derek is the strong silent type; I am the designated chatty typist.

>Rick and Derek often do what I do, stay in three star and

>four star hotels.

He don't know us vewy well, do he? :p We are official priceline hotel snobs. 4 stars or nothing.

>In my case, I use a

>port for a mobile optical mouse with a retractable cord.

Does it match your mobile uncut dick with a retractable foreskin?

>Good luck, guys!

Thanks, Franco. I will re-read your post when I get home & take it into consideration. :*

RE: Lap Tops

I purchased a sony viao, and am quite happy with it. they have several price points too. I like the good display and all the dvd/video stuff that goes along with it. I have it to replace my desktop at home. I cannot imagine having a desktop taking all that space at home now.

128 mg RAM is not enought, go for 256. 20g plus hard drive seems to be a bit larger than necessary for most home users.
