I’m one of those people who believe obesity, smoking, and substance abuse are life style choices NOT illnesses. I also believe that we all should have the right to make the life style choices we wish.

 

I have fat friend, an alcoholic friend, and a depressed friend, all of whom I love and know intimately. They all say with great emphasis we others just do not understand that they did not choose their "life style." The underlying cause is genetic, maybe or maybe not exacerbated by life events. Neither do we comprehend how very hard it is to live otherwise.

 

Sort of like being gay, I guess.

Alcoholism may run in families so perhaps it's genetic. Same thing for depression. But no where in the world are people genetically programmed to be fat. Whenever I go to Europe (especially Eastern Europe) I am amazed at how slim the general populace is. It is a matter of diet and exercise, plain and simple. OK, some folks may have thyroid issues, but if that is the cause of all the obesity in the US, why are the drug companies (those money vultures) not doing research into creating pills that would eliminate thyroid obesity? People are thin in Eastern Europe because they don't eat like US people. Same thing in Asia and Africa. Alcoholism may be genetic as I said above, but people can say no to being drunk, whether by going to AA or simply saying no. Depression may be a chemical imbalance in the brain so there isn't too much you can do there except take medicine and/or try to develop coping skills that enable you to rise above the depression. Even if these qualities are life style choices (and I don't believe that), there is still a matter of personal choice to give in to the impulse. It's easier to believe that we have no control over our lives and that we are all in a sense victims of fate. There now, that's so much easier, isn't it? I think I'll celebrate my victimhood with a chocolate chip cookie - hell. maybe I'll eat the whole bag. I need the comfort.

I don't think its quite as simple as you make it out to be. I beleive that sexual orientation has a genetic component and is not a life-style choice. But you could choose not to act on it. (Note that I am NOT saying you should.) I believe there is a genetic pre-disposition to alchlolism and other addictions. As you say, an alcoholic can choose whether or not he/she drinks, but that choice is harder for them than for someone without the genetic pre-disposition. There have also been studies that show different brain responses to food in certain people. People are usually over-weight because of choices, but the difficulty associated with those choices is NOT the same for everyone, because of differences in metabolism, brain chemistry, and socio-economic situations. A recent publsihed study showed that when economically-disadvantaged peopel were re-located to 'better' neighbordhoods, the incidence of obesity & diabetes was significantly less than the control group who remained in a disadvantaged neighborhood.

I agree with your observations, seeker. It used to be a societal expression of wealth or being well off to be "well fed" and, as you mention, when folks from less favorable economic places migrate to a place more economically favorable, many, if not most, gain weight. Not necessarily good for your physical health but very good for your mental health.

 

It is difficult to "overcome" genetic "inheritances" which include a myriad of features, attitudes and diseases. I am not in favor of genetic "control" but we have a long way to go to "improve" the human race, don't we?
