I just arrived home with some very nice fresh jumbo shrimp and I was planning on having the shrimp with some salsa. I decided to go with some store bought salsa that I had in the frig. Upon opening the salsa, which was opened about two weeks ago and refrigerated, I noticed a bit of white material on top. Not too much less than a tsp full in an 12 oz jar. Rather than eating the shrimp plain or returning to the store for some

fresh salsa, I went with the scoop it out and hope for the best method. So two things:

One, without further details, how many here would have eaten the salsa, assuming you like salsa on your shrimp.

Two, if I suddenly stop posting, please inform the authorities that it was probably the salsa that was responsible for my untimely passing.

As an aside, has anyone here ever eaten fugu, the Japanese delicacy which if not prepared correctly has the potential to be poisonous?

I would not have eaten the salsa. It just grosses me out. I googled "moldy salsa" and found a link to the California Poison Control System. They said you will turn into a giant penicillin tablet.

Just kidding. Here is what they have to say about moldy food:

"Is all moldy food dangerous?

Food poisoning is caused by various bacterial organisms. Mold is not a bacteria and will not cause food poisoning. Mold does not cause botulism unless the product was already contaminated with the botulism organism. Mold can cause illness, especially if the person is allergic to molds. Usually though, the main symptoms from eating moldy food will be nausea or vomiting from the bad taste and smell of the moldy food."

There is a risk that the salsa became contaminated with bacteria in addition to the mold. I would not take that risk. I have several food sensitivities, so it does not take much to trigger a stomach event.

Purple, it's funny that you mentioned about the salsa today. I wouldn't have touched it once I see or smell something suspicious. I think two weeks after being opened is a long time to keep any product in the fridge.

Coincidentally, yesterday I went to the local 7-eleven and I've got some non-fat greek yogurt. Upon getting back to my room and opening the package (with expiration date August 7th) I noticed some green mold inside and some strange odor. Needless to say I returned back to the store to replace it.

Now about Fugu (the poisonous fish), not many sashimi places serve it and offer it in their menu. I've had a few opportunities, but never had the courage to indulge in such degustation. Maybe one day when I feel more adventurous ...

Many French consider that 'blue cheese' with heavy mold and strong odor is delicatessen. I usually take a pass when I see it.

That's what I learned when researching 'molds'

Molds (or moulds; see spelling differences) are fungi that grow in the form of multicellular filaments called hyphae.[1] Molds are considered to be microbes but microscopic fungi that grow as single cells are called yeasts. A connected network of these tubular branching hyphae has multiple, genetically identical nuclei and is considered a single organism, referred to as a colony.

Molds do not form a specific taxonomic or phylogenetic grouping, but can be found in the divisions Zygomycota, Deuteromycota and Ascomycota. Some molds cause disease or food spoilage, others play an important role in biodegradation or in the production of various foods, beverages, antibiotics and enzymes.

I hope you don't get any stomach ache or food poisoning.

Nope, I would not have touched it! I have, a few times, cut off a small portion of a piece of bread or cheese and eatne the rest, when the food seemed otherwise ok and the mold was localized, but I'd never eat anything with a lot of liquid that had mold. (And I'm particularly wary of tomato products, due some half-remembered TV show in which someone died form food poisoning after ingesting some spoiled tomato sauce).

So you're saying purplekow may be green around the gills?

You don't say what *kind* of salsa. If it's tomato-based, chances are good that you wouldn't be able to stay in the same room with it if it's harmful. Tomatoes generally don't go a little bad, or turn over time. They go suddenly awful.

But check in over the next day or so to keep us from calling in paramedics, eh?

Are you being euphemistic or are you really talking about salsa?

Yes I lived to tell the tale. No euphemism, just funky salsa. Thanks for the messages. I was able to finish the Saturday and Sunday New York Times Crossword Puzzles with the time I had from not sleeping. So for future reference

If the salsa is funky; and you want to stay spunky; don't be a donkey; Replace that bottle bunky.

Personally, if I'm going to pick-up some 6/8 shrimp it's going to be food-on-a-stick, skewered on lemongrass and stuffed with cane sugar.
