Forty years ago mid-scale hotels had just started with their “complimentary continental breakfast” and my Dad would shake me awake at 7 AM so we could have free donuts, coffee and juice. No matter how much I begged he wouldn’t take me for so much as an Egg McMuffin - “Why, Michael? This is FREE!” Now you’ve got waffles and eggs and oatmeal. Dad is 83 now and when we travel (not often) he doesn’t understand why I make him get in the car at 8 AM so we can go have a decent breakfast of bagels and eggs. “Why, Michael? Back at the hotel it’s FREE!” However, if I can find a deli with blueberry blintzes, he’ll shut up. marylander1940, thomas and + JamesB 3

I've found consistently that, at least in the US, the free breakfasts are worth every cent you pay for them, as are the paper plates and disposable cutlery (thankfully, in Australia, for the most part they're worth the steps and time to partake, and actual china and silverware - stainless steel more likely - are involved). In the US, the places where the breakfast is a status benefit, if you're lucky enough to have that, not just 'free' are generally worth the effort, so that would be me in the right picture at them. Had one in Melbourne this morning, the continental breakfast buffet included smoked salmon and espresso machine coffee. But not till 9am.
