Now my experiences would say for a first outing it was very nice of you to ask his opinion and I would go with his selection of wine. If you want stronger than wine, then champagne is a nice classy option available in a $40-$200 range. I like Gimmonet (a lesser known producer). You could also select a Taittinger Comptes de Champagne (about $160) wHich is truly amazing and sure to impress.
