Lately a number of regular contributors here have commented on a trend that has begun to bother me.

It seems quite a few new escorts, or escorts who seem to have a "porn film" name, or who come into NYC from overseas, feel they can advertise in NYC (and perhaps elsewhere???) for $300-$350 and even more an hour, and still find sufficient clients at that "high" end (there will always be a few who have millions to burn, but I think the majority of clients here on this web board are more economically middle of the road...)

Admittedly, my experience is more with the European market (with different salary scales), but one thing about most European escorts I met over the years - the initial fee (anywhere from 100-300 Euros) was ALWAYS for a minimum of 2 hours, and overnights never more than 500-600 Euros (which is less than $1,000).

An economic fact is that life is less expensive these days in the US than in Europe, and so one would think the fees escorts charge here would be lower, but this NYC trend of guys asking over $300 for a measly hour is alarming.

So, I guess I am asking: how many of us in these economic times have $300-$1500 to just throw around here and there on a weekly or so basis?

Do escorts undcerstand that they may be pricing themselves OUT of the market? (or is this something that really has no effect on them?)

What would clients feel is "fair market value" for an hour, two hours and overnight?

I ask this because on the new advanced search for RENTBOY you can state a "lower and upper" price for the guy and the search engine eliminates quite a few from the choice.

These days, I watch my hard-earned dollars more than usual, and limit my entertainment (eating more at home and avoiding most dinners in restaurants, restricting theatre or other night entertainment to a special treat and investing in decent DVDs over live theatre... much to my dismay; and when it comes to guys... as I prefer a minimal of two hours for an 'scort" want to make sure I get the most BANG for the BUCK and so seek out guys who charge $200/hr or who have negotiable rates... So, I miss out on the pricier - and admittedly more to my liking types...

Any thoughts?

Is "$300 to $1500 on a weekly basis" an accurate description of most? Or would $300 on a monthly basis be more accurate?

Sutherland, that's my point. A few years ago, on a weekly basis may have been OK (it was lower per hour admittedly), but now... I shop more carefully, and ofgten am limited to once MONTH -- kind of like doing a COSTCO or WALMARK search for quality at a reasonable price... Not easy.

I think that I first saw NYC escorts starting to charge $300 or more per hour way back in maybe 2003. It's one of the reasons that's been an attractive venue for traveling escorts.

As you note, an escort with a porn name may feel that they can charge more because of that and perhaps they can; if there are clients who will pay more in order to hire a "porn star" then they would be foolish to charge less. Nevertheless, I've never found any kind of direct relationship between price charged and quality of escort. If anything, I've found something of an indirect relationship since some higher-priced escorts will develop an attitude that they bring to the occasion.

One can always find fun escorts in NYC for far less than $300 per hour if one is willing to look a bit. :)

As far as I’m concerned I sincerely believe it is just great that there are clients who are willing to pay an escort, any escort, $300+ an hours. However, I’m NOT about to be one of them. I find the $300+ hourly rate outrageous and absurd in any market and that includes New York, So Ca or London. It’s a damn big sea out there and it has lots of fish in it. I always hire for lunch or dinner and a couple of hours of play time. I expect to pay between $500 and $600 for such an arrangement and have had NO difficult finding excellent, desirable escorts willing to accept that rate. I recently emailed a newly advertised escort requesting his rate for such an arrangement. He emailed back that his rate would be $400 per hour - I simply laughed and didn’t even bother to respond.

With economy being what it is, there has a been huge inflow of new 'talent' on the escorting websites in NYC, which should bring prices down. I can't think of any reason to pay $300 per hour except if it's a truly exceptional situation - either physical attributes, unique skills or both.

I also have the impression that more and more masseurs/escorts in NYC now offer discounted rates to their regulars.

I can remember only two occasions when I paid more than $250 for an appointment (both times in 2004, one in NYC and one in LA), and both experiences were disappointing. There are plenty of attractive guys out there for $250 or less, so unless the market changes drastically in future--or Aunt Mildred leaves me a fortune I didn't know she had--that is my limit.

A traveling escort who was here recently from another state had an Ask Me notation on is rentboy ad. When I spoke to him on the phone he mentioned that for escort work, the going rate for NYC was $300 - $350, but since I knew that the rate hovers more from $200 - $300, I basically told him outright I couldn't afford him. Of course, since he himself wasn't so versed in the rates here, he acceded to $200 for the hour upon sensing my hesitation, which told me he arbitrarily raised his rates to reflect the perceived market rate. Later, when we had met and had a good time, he offered me an added discount of $50 for the next time we might schedule, but later canceled on me when he got a better offer at $300/hour. We met up later that week at the discounted rate of $150.

Translation: it's pretty arbitrary.

US Market pricing

I live in LA and hire almost weekly and $300 is pretty outrageous for either LA or NY. Both times I've tried $300 guys (hoping for somewhat of a porn fantasy type experience) I've been sadly disappointed, just too much ego and attitude. One of the problems I have with rentboy.com is the rate inflation, if guys have ads elsewhere (m4rn, a4a, rm, b4rn, mer, etc) their rates are often jacked up on rb compared with elsewhere. I'm guessing because rb is considered "premier" and can bring in some millionaire sugar daddy clients, but kind of kills it for everybody else. I like rentboy's new rate filter but it's unfortunate that you can't weed out the menu pricing "varies" BS.

I've noticed that some LA guys recently tried jumping from $200 to $250 and quickly went right back down. I think there's a market/affordability cliff at $200 which drops off pretty dramatically unless they are porn stars or world class reputation types.

My sweet spot for local is $150-200 and here in LA there are plenty of guys that seem quite satisfied with that (they very much encourage return visits, anyway). Many guys (including my favorite regular) price at $150-180 due to the recession and business drop-off. And that's with full service BFE, my admittedly oddball fetish and a little massage thrown in for good measure.

Brooklyn Guy makes an excellent point which is also true for So Ca. Most escorts traveling to L.A. want to stay in Weho. The least expensive hotel there is probably the Ramada and it charges $150 - $250 a night not including taxes and parking. I have, however, recently made arrangements to meet with an out of town escort, at the Ramada, for dinner and two hour at the reasonable rate of $500.

More than $300 is silly here.

It amazes me that the NY pricing is so high. Competition on Rentboy is huge. Often over 400 listings. I understand that visitors need to cover expenses, and porn stars have a certain fantasy-filling cachet, but otherwise I am stunned that anyone else gets away with $300 or more. Alencar is the only guy to whom I have paid $300 that was worth every penny. Have repeated several times. But my regular guy is still $200, and is one of the best reviewed, (and biggest hung) men in town.

TopGun has been on my want list for ages, but at $400, there's no way. He must not need to pay his rent with funds from this source of income. Heck at that rate, untaxed, he'd only need to see 5 guys every two weeks to match my take home. But as I write that I realize that's probably exactly as he likes it.

I miss the days of Stellas and Rounds when, at the end of the month when rent was due, you could go and meet the guys and get a hottie for $150 or $200. Had my rent not also been due, I would have brought home several. <sigh>

Pretty much spot on. He's told me he has a set of regulars aside from his regular day job. Nice work if you can get it, right?

NYC rates

One can have a great time in NYC for 200-250 with local guys who have apartments. Visiting escorts charge more because covering the daily nut in NYC at a decent hotel is very expensive. If you want to see a traveller who is not exhausting himself with 2 or 3 or even more clients in a day, you have to expect to pay a very high rate.

That said, there are a handful of travellers with whom I've had good times in NY, but they kept their rates down by staying at economic hotels or even borrowing apartments from friends.

I'm sure there are many on here, myself included, who would love to know who your regular is!

Tried and True

If you look at some of the best reviewed escorts here that you can surely count on you can see they don't charge the HUGE rates some of these new guys do. I am thinking that if an escort wants that much more than someone like Kristian for example, he better be that much better and I doubt that is possible - so stick with the tried and true until someone posts a review

Dougiefreshsf makes an excellent point. I am convinced that many of these $300+ an hour guys are new to the business. They are young, good looking and have nice street bodies. They look at sites like rentboy and conclude that being fresh meat they can charge a fortune. I would bet money that many of them intend to jump into escorting for a short time, make a fortune and bail out. Since they don’t expect to be around for long they see no need to do any extensive research. They aren’t really very interested in looking into what makes an outstanding escort as they are convinced that being young, good looking and having a nice street body is all it takes. After not getting rich in a few months they either drop out or take a reality check. If, at this point, they decided to remain in the business they open their eyes to reality look around and join the mainstream. .

There are, of course, exceptions to the above. The escorts who successfully charge the big bucks, over an extended period of time, tend to be specialists. “Porn stars”, huge bodybuilders, or guys with exceptionally large cocks can often charge the big bucks and sustain a career.

I seem to remember '99/2000 and early 2001 $300 and $350 was not terribly uncommon in NYC. Aaron Lawrence et al.

In LA several $250/275 at that time.

In '99 I chose $220, which has stayed the same for 10 years thank you, and did so to undercut the competition.

My female escort friends in NYC are around $1500 an hour.

One must say they are lucky, and privileged. At the risk of incurring a little scorn here, I identify as gay but hire girls fairly often too. NYC is overflowing with beautiful and generous girls of every ethnicity for $200 to $300 an hour.

Mr Smith..Hiring "Working Girls" is definitely something I know a few BI "Working Guys" do also!

For a very good reason..A PRO CLIT is always more FUN for those into them! :D
