I don't know the official definition, but I think of an otter as being a guy who is quite hairy, but is not large like a bear. It also implies youth. No matter how he is built, to me, a guy in his forties or fifties isn't an otter. A youthful 30's could qualify. I have a special affection for otters, either the animals or the men who call themselves such.

OK Im glad Im not the only one unsure here. I asked someone when an otter become a bear and they just said I would know it when I see it. Sort of the supreme court pornography answer. meaning they dont know.

 

It's subjective. When an otter gains enough weight he becomes a bear, but it's impossible to define the moment of transition. Bear is a subjective term as well.
