Someone should inform the Senator that we have had an openly gay president in the past. James Buchanan was commonly known to have a male companion and live in. The gentleman whose name escapes me was a member of congress, a Senator I believe, and the Senator was known as the First Lady. The actual first lady was one of Buchanan's nieces. Old trivia question was which president never married? New question is why did the president not marry? It wasn't legal in Washington DC until 2009

Buchanan's alleged companion was Alabama Senator William Rufus King. He died before Buchanan became president. Andrew Jackson referred to King as "Miss Nancy" and "Aunt Fancy" at various times which are obvious references to sexuality.

Further, Buchanan consistently ranks as possibly the worst president ever in US history. He failed to address the issues leading to the War Between the States. Buchanan personally agreed with slave owners and supported expansion of slavery to other territories. He was a Democrat as well.

King was vice president under Pierce I think and Buchanan did have southern leaning sympathies which lead him to have a laissez faire attitude toward the south. While a cabinet member, he did try to get Kansas admitted as a slave state, though eventually with the Missouri Compromise Missouri was admitted as a slave state and Kansas as a Free State.

Anyway, Buchanan may have been the bottom of the presidential heap, but hey, being the bottom one probably has some significance.

Wikipedia does mention the Buchanan's writings were just about all destroyed by his family but there is a letter in his hand to a friend stating that he was trying to meet men since King had gone to Europe but none of them seemed to respond in the way he wanted.

DeMint or Demented?

Let me think of all of the straight presidents who have been immoral.....yup, I count about 43 of them!

Lol. Lucky, you got that one right!

I believe slavery is/was immoral... and he's from south carolina... and the bible was used THERE to keep and justify slavery (Exodus 21).

I also find selling your daughters into slavery is, like it says in the Bible, immoral.

I also find it immoral to force a rape victim to marry her rapist (Deuteronomy 22:29).

So by Jim Demint's logic, I don't think Heterosexual, Christian Senators of his ilk should be allowed to be president.

PK, I'm afraid your American history is shaky. The Missouri Compromise (1820) admitted Missouri as a slave state and Maine as a free state. The Kansas-Nebraska Act (1854) allowed the residents of those two territories to chose whether they would be slave or free states, the popular assumption being that Nebraska would choose to be free and Kansas would choose to be slave. King was already dead by then, having died only one month after being inaugurated as Pierce's V-P in 1853.

Thanks Charlie One should never write off the top of one's head when dealing with readily verifiable information. I bow to your wisdom and correctness about the Missouri Compromise, basically a pact to allow a slave state and a free state to be admitted together though I did not realize that Maine was the other state. Would not have gotten that right even with a multiple choice. I was not referring to King as working to get get Kansas admitted as a slave state, rather I was referring to Buchanan trying to get Kansas into the union as a slave state.

Sure wish I'd seen this thread back in the days I was still lurking. Could not have resisted posting as "Aunt Fancy".

It's never too late to create an "alternate identity".

I think you should start a Gay Advice Coulmn: Aunt Fancy says.

Dear Aunt Fancy, I have a friend, I will call him Romann, not his real name, and he seems to be travelling to all sorts of places but never seems to stay in my town long enough. Aunt Fancy, how can I convince "Romann" to quit roamin' and settle down in a town near me?" Sincerely, Purple one out standing in a field.

Will that win me the prize as Aunt Fancy's first client?

Aunt Fancy Says . . .

Dear Purple One,

Your story brings to mind the difficulty faced by a dear childhood friend of mine, one Mauve Boveen of Selma, Alabama. Miss Boveen fancied a young Southern gladiator who was constantly on the move from one small town to the next. Not only was the object of her desire peripatetic, but she feared he might one day seek comfort in the arms of one of the numerous "belles" who found his youthful charm and manly bearing too overpowering to resist. She fretted terrifically whenever he was away from her, and suffered the vapors each day he was gone.

Eventually, on the advice of her physician, she had built, just a short distance from the main manor house, a modern and tasteful private quarters for the young gentleman. She invited him to live there, on the condition that he cease his wanderings, and spend the remainder of his days as her guest. He never again had to concern himself about earning a living, nor would he want for sustenance, raiment, and sufficient leisure activity to keep his mind and body in peak condition. A smart tan phaeton was placed at his disposal.

It was an arrangement that suited them both for many years, and there was a well-worn path between the main house and the guest lodge.

Trusting you and your young gentleman will find many years of crossed paths and contentment, I remain,

Aunt Fancy

Eloquently stated Aunt Fancy. Your advice makes one long for the genteel days when one could build a small mansionette for the purpose of housing a particularly pleasing young man and keeping him and his artistry close at hand. I will certainly ponder your words of wisdom and consider options. Thanks again.

Aunt Fancy, your first column was nothing less than delightful. And cranked out in less than an hour! Daddy should give you your own slot in the main forum, right below "Ask An Escort." If it catches on, he could put the column into syndication and the two of you could retire to Florida (I hear Tiger's house will be soon be on the market).

Ummm, syndication might require a different avatar:

Entré nous, MsGuy, owing to some rather unfortunate remarks by a most unchivalrous colleague, I find it prudent to remain dans l'armoire for the nonce. Therefore, while comely and flatteringly youthful in appearance, the avatar you have suggested would not prove satisfactory at present.

However, your graciousness is duly noted, and my housemate and I would be pleased if you will join us next weekend for an informal reception to honor a merry and willing band of freshman pages. Dress is casual, and hand towels will be provided. Regrets only, s'il vous plait.

Aunt Fancy
