It's the economy, stupid???

Has there really been a recession, and has it affected escorts? I just read the post on escort "stalking," which was premised on the idea that some escorts may be acting more aggressively in initiating contact with clients, presumably because the economy is down and their business is hurting.

I started escorting in Summer 2000, just as the economy was supposedly tanking. I escort in Oregon, which has the highest unemployment rate is the US, and San Francisco, home of the well known dot-com implosion. Given when I started, I don't really have a reference point to the "good times" of the late 1990's. But if these are the "bad times," I guess I like it real bad. I haven't noticed any real change since I started, and as far as I can tell from escort friends in Seattle, Portland, and San Francisco, neither have they.

The one theory I have heard from several clients I've discussed this with is that sex is the last thing that goes on a tight budget, so to some degree escorts have been immune from the recession by virtue of their perceived necessity. Gosh, clients, you like us, you really really like us! (I've always wanted to have a Sally Field moment. Thanks).

I'm curious whether many clients out there feel like they have really cut back on what they spend on escorts. If you haven't, why not?

My own story....

I tend to hire escorts more when I'm traveling and I haven't been anywhere since 9/11; a number of reasons for that.

I keep telling myself I need to start out by driving to LA and getting together with someone there, then work my way back into flying to NY and enjoying some of the wonderful men available there.

But I did take a friend to Club 220 here in San Francisco and saw Pappi Moreno perform - wubba, wubba! Maybe I'll get around to hiring a local boy.

The economy has something to do with my thinking; but not everything.

I've definitely cut back. Part of it is my lack of employment and part of it was a truly wretched experience last time out of the gate.

Between the two situations, I just don't feel much like hiring.

It's mostly the economy. Otherwise you'd be seeing one review/month at my normal pace.

Guest Spunk

It isn't due to ... "It's the economy, stupid???" it is due to "It's the escorts, stupid!"

I'm in a recession proof business and continue to do well financially. Sadly many hard working people are having a tough time due to the very unstable economy.

I do not hire as many escorts as I once did due to the mass amount of escort's who simply are of very low quality yet request unusually high fees.

Once the quality improves and the fee is reduced I will return to my typical pattern of hiring frequently.

In the meantime the escort needs my money far more than I need his cock.

Spunk, you keep returning to this, that those of us who are charging $200 and $300 each hour are overcharging. You may be right, but exactly why shouldn't we charge what the market will bare? You're a businessman, are we being unethical by setting our own rates, rates that many others, not you, will happily pay? If it is unethical, how so?

Sorry Steve that I've temporarily hijacked this thread, I've got a Spunk to grind. p.s. Glad business is good. I'm not surprised, you're a super guy.

I have been hiring less often, but it's not the economy, which has no effect on my income. The truth is that with all the information on this site, and the communication on the message board, hiring escorts has become much less stimulating than it used to be. Escorts used to be mysterious strangers and hiring them a tense, unpredictable and even dangerous activity. Now it's about as exciting as make a dental appointment. The thrill is gone.

Or have I just grown too old?

As a client, escorts for me are a very pleasant luxury in life. I am fortunate enough to have a job that let's me enjoy various luxuries like travel and escorts (which can always be combined!), so unless the job is in danger, I am very happy to continue to enjoy certain luxuries. Among various luxuries, escorts would be among the last to go, in that you get a lot more good feeling from some time with an escort than you do with a good restaurant meal or say most nights on the town.

Well, either way, at least you know you're definitely gonna get something shoved in your mouth, and you're also probably gonna get drilled.

But you do offer an interesting point of view. I mean, its come to the point that you have well-educated men hiring similarly well-educated escorts and making clear agreements about what they will provide based on specific, written information that is private and readily available. What fun is that? In the good old days I could just go down to Sunset or Melrose and hope to get picked up by a drug addict, rapist, psycho, or cop. Those were the days! :)

You asked the clients but....

... let me share what my clients and escort friends say to me. Escorts are a luxury item, not a necessity. We are expensive so they need to save up and even those clients in "recession proof" industries not impacted by September 11th are being more cautious.

My friends have experienced some "slow down." That said, the last six weeks have been exceedingly busy for me but I was content to do three to four clients a week on average earlier this year.
