What picture would you send of yourself if you needed to show how masculine you are? Here's a story on what one guy found out, and lots of pix of these masculine guys!

Masculine guys? It would be difficult to imagine a group of bigger losers than the collection shown here. And if you have to send in a pic of yourself to prove you are masculine - you're not.

It seems you two just looked at the pictures and didn't read the story below. Nobody "sent in" their photos. This is an art project by photographer Chad States, who won the Emerging Artist Fellowship from the Delaware Division of the Arts, and I found his explanation very interesting:

I use a large-format camera. I take about 10 photographs during a two- to three-hour process. Every move is slow and very intentional. The subjects have made specific decisions about the way they are posing. I am never catching them off-guard or unaware. If you notice that in all of the photographs the subject is looking directly at the camera. This is the only request that I insist on. I want this to be in their hands as much as possible. Though in the end, the photographer does always have ultimate control—this is especially true in the editing process.

It is definitely exploitative to a degree. I don’t think that I can escape from that, though in the end that is inconsequential to the ideas that are being talked about. People may find a lot of comedic details in the photograph, but I feel that is a reflection of their own ideas of masculinity and how a subject may or may not fit into that concept. Once again, the subject does have control over how they are photographed.

I' m curious as to why all of the respondents live in hovels (excluding the teacher of course)

The photographer stated that all photos were taking in the homes of the subjects (excluding the teacher of course) seems like at least one of them could have lived in something above the level of a flop house....no

I suppose you live in some spendid mansion to make such an arrogant remark. Most of the settings struck me as normal, not some Hollywood impression of how most Americans are supposed to live.

None of the places are opulent certainly and almost all are in disarray. One might think this reflects the kind of people who invite a stranger into their lives to photograph them. At least one of them is at work so it is possible that some of the others are also at a place other than their home. I must say, Luke, the nude sitting in the chair with a drink in his hand, really sounds like an ass. "I am masculine because I leave women after I take their love" or some such. Just an ass.

I think he was just being facetious and trying to be irreverent. I thought it was a funny thing to say. :D

NORMAL...i live in the great Commonwealth of Kentucky...and those flophouses depicted are not normal even here.

Do i live in a splendid mansion?. Ummmm true,i did live well, when i lived at home...splendid mansion...nahh more like a McMansion, typical Jewish Attorneys abode.

Finally leaving the nest Jeff and i bought a house that lost 70k in appraised value shortly after we bought it and that is enough of a concession .We are only in our late mid 20s and no we have never lived in a place like those shown. Does that make me arrogant,NO, should we have for some purpose unknown to me lived like that...errrr nope think not.

Sorry you think i'm arrogant because i was lucky in the mommy and daddy pool...but tough shit.

I would dispute your statement. The only setting that appears to be in "disarray" is the one where a young man is sitting near a staircase. That place is obviously in the early stages of being renovated.

There is a young Latino appearing man who appears to be in his bedroom where quite a few sneakers are lined up against the wall and clothes are hanging in the background. No disarray there. I imagine many teenagers have much messier bedrooms.

Another man is lying on a four poster bed with a simple sidetable, all very tastefull and no signs of disarray there. A large muscular man is standing in a white room on what appears to be an expensive hand woven carpet with a large poster on the wall. No mess there!

The self-identified gay man is standing in a sparely furnished blue room and the only thing I noticed was that the french doors had a plastic covering on the inside which struck me as indicating an insulation measure.

A young black man was standing in a modest white room that showed a futon and a box that served as a coffee table. A few items were lying on the sofa and table but nothing "messy'"

Another man with a mask was standing in what appeared to be an attic room with cheap wood panelling but no mess there either.

Finally, the first picture was of a man (SNAG) reposing on a nice white bed in a Japanesse setting, very simple and tasteful.

So I just don't get all this talk about "hovels" and "disarray". I think some people around here need to get out and see how people live in the real world, not some impression gained by watching TV or going to the movies.

That's actually a woman (her name is Liz and her quote says, “When I wear men’s clothes I feel comfortable and confident in how I look on the outside which now matches the inside”) but I agree with the rest of your post!

After reviewing the pictures again, change almost all to some. Still not opulent. As for living in the real world, I live in the real world, I grew up in the real world and my real world of a barber father and seamstress mother was neater than these places. My home, on the other hand is not, but then again, I am not getting it photographed for publication.

Most of these look places like older homes or apartments. I agree that while they are not opulent--they are not really hovels. It would be interesting to know what these people do for a living? I would also like to know what area of the country these were done--assuming that all the pictures were taken in the same region of the country.
