It's still officially winter for another full day here, but here we are, over 20 degrees.

It's finally cooling down here in Palm Springs: today's high temp is supposed to be only 107F.

I “skipped” summer last year because I was in Buenos Aires, where I enjoyed its beautifully mild winter, mid-50s most days.  I am “skipping” this summer also, this time in Manila’s rainy season.  

I was dreading rainy season because I imagined it rained all day every day.  While it does rain almost every day, it’s usually just for 3-4 hours at a time.  The end of dry season is definitely the roughest (at least for me) time in of year:  the highest temperatures of the year (95-98 most days) with humidity at the usual 80+ percent.

The good thing about rainy season is the daily high drops 10-12 degrees, thanks to the frequent rain and cloud cover.  The rain also cleans the air of some of the heavy vehicle exhaust.  I was lucky to miss the worst typhoon so far this year but did see some video — yikes, literally feet of water in some streets.

One final note:  I remember how retailers decided to extend the holiday shopping season by putting up Christmas decorations after Halloween instead of after Thanksgiving, and that made the holiday season feel way too long.  In the Philippines, the first Christmas decorations go up at 12:01am on September 1.  Yup, Christmas season here lasts more than 4 months.

That time of year in the Australian Northern Territory is called the Build-Up. The heat stays and intensifies (it's coming into what's called summer in more temperate climates) and the humidity increases at the same time, yet there's no rain storm to offer relief from it. It's the sort of weather that can slowly drive you insane. In the Wet, there's predictable afternoon rain that makes things bearable, or at least sightly more bearable than it had been.
