I'm putting this in general discussion. Because I think it may also fall into fetish category or fitness, or other. I will explain as I go I guess.

Ok, I'm not a big person. I'm roughly 160 pounds at the moment. I have decided to start back weight lifting. I was into it several years back when I had a good buddy that went with me. More on that in a moment.

I have turned my spare room into a gym. I would greatly appreciate any help with getting into shape. Which, to be fair I'm not bad. But I want to fill out a bit better.

Now to the fetish part. Because I used to go to the gym with a powerlifter build gay dude. Working out immediately turns into a sexual thing for me.  Right now I just have porn playing while I lift. I don't get hard or anything but it seems like it  works better than music to put me in a work out mood. I'm wondering if anybody else does the same?

Now back to the giant gay powerlifter. I did not know he was gay at the time. Just a good friend. But when he spotted me and I was laid back on a bench looking up his shorts. I was usually able to push a bit more weight. He came out to me later on but because life sucks sometimes, I missed out on a great opportunity.

So the point of this is. I want to get back in shape. Any fitness people on here? I also have a bit of a gym fetish that I want to get back into.

I used to have a provider who would work out with me in the gym for about 45 minutes. Then he would give me a sensual massage which usually turned into more. So perhaps I share the feelings you have about working out at the gym, surrounded by mostly young hot guys. Working out with another dude is a good plan. It helped me stay focused more on the exercise and technique and less on the surrounding scenery. But you're right about one thing: Hooking up after working out is incredibly fun.

Oh man that's a total fantasy of mine! Did he just charge you regular escort rates or was it a hybrid of personal trainer and escort rates?

Would love to find a provider like that in San Francisco.

I’ve done that for a few clients. I’m not a PT but I am a regular at the gym and know what to do. I’ve had a few clients staying in hotels who book me to start out with half hour or so work out in the hotel gym, then back to their room for a massage etc. it works quite well especially if the gym is quiet and you can work out just wearing shorts.

As for getting back to fitness I think the best advice is to build it into your routine, have a set time to workout, mix it up with weights, stretching and cardiovascular work like running or swimming. Avoid doing too much too soon because injury is likely to knock you out of the routine. Once you’ve been in the routine for 4 weeks or so it’s more or less set and you just keep it up.

Just regular rates. It was a wonderful arrangement and I'm sorry it didn't last longer.

My escort/trainer charged me one-third our weekly 2-hour private play session for 2 separate weekly one-hour gym workouts at my weekend place near a moderately attended gym. Example for ratio illustration: $240 for private; $40 for a Saturday gym session and $40 for a Sunday gym session. Net $320 weekly. He had a ‘pro card’ for competition physique class. He trained separately.

2 more weekly sessions on my own Tuesday and Thursday at my working week location, later evening in order to access gym stations when peak attendance had levelled off.

3 targeted muscle-group programs over a 4-day split, so that the rotation enabled the in-person weekend coaching to stagger over 3 weeks … Week 1 program 1&2, Week 2 program 2&3, Week 3 program 3&1, etc. Never more than one hour; four weekly.

Strict high-protein diet. Gained on average one pound of mostly muscle mass per month within a little over 2 years then decided to simply maintain.

The key, though, was access to a comprehensive range of resistance exercises within fully equipped gyms, and program revisions q6wks. That could not have been accommodated with a makeshift home gym.

All of that sounds very disciplined and methodical in its execution. You must have a very regular life to stick to such a routine.
In my working days I also worked gym and trainers into my regular schedule. Except I travelled a lot for business so many interruptions in my routine.
After I retired I was able to maintain a more regular routine.
Now many years later I mostly swim and do a little exercise at the gym. No more trainers.

The OP wants to gain muscle mass from a fit but lean starting point that seems similar to what mine was, not just exercise regularly for maintenance and conditioning as I have done for several years without additional mass gains. He isn’t referring to decades of training. My routine aimed at about 20% eventual weight gain certainly did require a few years of discipline and one or two additional dedicated hours weekly, as well as doing sets at weights to failure (certainly not my current playbook) under the trainer’s guidance. The trainer scoffed at my scepticism in terms of such endeavours past age 50. I thought that my historical metabolism would impede the goals but I achieved them anyway. I was not traditionally “bulking” and it was slow and steady. That intense period represented only about 5% of my total years of going to the gym but yielded advances that couldn’t subsequently be taken from me. As far as cutting into other activities it was essentially far less daunting than the sacrifices involved in fitting in limited but intense cycles of higher education while working full time.

I was always happy with my figure. I only trained to keep fit. If you gain muscle mass you have to buy a whole new set of clothes. I can still wear suits and jackets from 30 or more years ago.

1. Avoid ego lifting, which a home gym is good for since there's no one else around to impress. Increase the number of repetitions with good form before increasing weight. It's also easier on the joints (if you have joint issues, select exercises that are easier on the joints such as dumbbell presses or certain machines rather than barbell presses).

2. Hitting muscle groups more frequently produces better results, especially among older men. It doesn't necessarily require more sets, just hitting each muscle group more than once per week (e.g., 5 sets twice per week is better than 10 sets once a week).

He’s less than half my age, a fireman, and wishes to “fill out”. I did it at an age that exceeds his by two decades.  LOL

Where did he say he was a fireman or give his age. 160 pounds seems small for a fireman if he is one.

I don’t know. Look it up. The female pompier I met is short but very athletic. If they do it’s only relevant to the OP and not this discussion other than that height combined with 160 lbs informs plans regarding muscle mass gain strategy.

When was 40 I was 5’11 and a half and weighed 160 pounds. I had a 31” waist and was slim. Today I am 78 and 5’11” (lost a half inch) and 175 pounds. 34 inch waist.

Well, the other night I wrote a long and detailed post answering all the questions. But somehow when I hit submit, it disappeared. I was a bit unhappy and decided to come back and try again later. This one is going to be a little quicker.

Started with the volunteer FD when I was 18. Probably about 130 pounds soaking wet. There are height and weight requirements, but they vary from FD to FD. Each county and state have different standards. I was plenty big enough to carry fire hoses, and being smaller was an advantage when having to crawl into tight spaces. It's a good thing to have a smaller person on the team, sooner or later you will need them. I stayed about 140-145 pounds through the majority of my twenties. I'm five foot nine. Always slender but pretty fit because of my jobs. But I also worked crazy hours for more than a decade. Twelve through sixteen hour shifts. Never had a chance to sit still, never had time to eat properly or sleep for more than five or six hours at best.

Now, I work eight hour shifts, with a still physical job but much less unwanted cardio. I just weighed myself again and I'm at 165. Still not fat, but have a bit of a belly. I'm actually excited that I can actually gain weight now, and just want to gain it in the right way.

And the home gym is a bit more than a thrown together cheap set up. I go all in with everything I do. It's not what I want yet, but I'm going to keep building it as needed. When it outgrows the house, I'll put a shed out back and keep expanding. The reason I'm doing this instead of going to a regular gym is because that would be an hour out of my way every day. I'm not a new years resolution to go to the gym, and give up after two months kind of person. When I make my mind up on something, that's it. It pushes me even further when I'm financially invested in it. I'm not going for a body builder physique. Just want to fill a shirt out better, if that makes sense.

So any advice or help is more than welcome.
