"People describe me" sounds like: I'M REALLY NOT all that hot....but my grandmother and Auntie Pearl once described me as good looking......

actually in a culture full of over-the-top superlatives, i found this understatement a bit refreshing - if nothing else made me want to check him out and judge for myself!

Actually I see it as the opposite. To avoid sounding immodest, he won't say it in the first person. Otherwise it sounds self absorbed.

Yes. I'm aware that's what he's TRYING to do. But the effect comes off as being deceptive. Either you are or you are not. 

THIS FOOD IS DELICIOUS !! vs. Certain people might enjoy this sort of cuisine.
