The proportion of Americans who live in a town with under 2,000 people seems small.

If by attending a school, you mean going to college- and non-close friends find out about a community member’s overdose, then that counts, though I would say that’s different from closely “knowing” or having “known”that person.

This is just drug overdoses.  I think it’s reasonable that another 9 percent know someone who died of alcohol-related causes.
