I walked in the door arriving from work and turned on the news to hear about Maggie Smith.  Sad to hear it.

If I may share my two favorite films with her,

in Room with a View, I love all her scenes, especially with Dame Judy Dench.

Gosford Park, another great movie, Maggie Smith shines from the opening scenes through until the outro theme.

Julian Sands and Dame Maggie Smith both gone now.   R.I.P.

Dame Maggie In “The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie” (1969) completely changed my young teen-aged outlook on the art of acting in film. As an opera aficionado, I absolutely loved the more recent “Quartet” (2012)

She was so excellent in everything she did! Truly one of a kind!

Iconic. she’s the perfect mix of strict and sassy. In the movie we can tell she’s not having any of Deloris’s (Whoopi Goldberg’s) “different” “wild” ways at first, and that’s what makes the thing so fun and cute. She’s all about the rules and tradition, but then Deloris turns the conventions and the convent upside down, and we see Maggie’s character slowly starting to soften. Her dry humor, voice, and those perfectly timed eye rolls—classic! Great actress of course, watching her go from being super serious and stern to eventually embracing the changes Deloris brings, having a good time, is one of the best parts of the movie. Maggie brings this regal energy, to any movie, even in a nun’s habit, she's great, that only she can pull off. Absolutely love her

She could do it all.  Loved her character in "Sister Act."  I roared when the habit-clad nuns went into the casino and Smith's character tells them to "blend in."image.thumb.jpeg.46d2a36ab2393e2d31512e5a99371952.jpeg

What I found impressive is how Maggie Smith didn't buy into the "celebrity" cult that strangles America. In more than one interview Smith said she enjoyed going where she wanted to go and do what she wanted without being recognized. Acting was a job for her and that mindset probably helped keep her sane and happy.

I did hear her lament that after Downton Abbey she could do so less readily. She was indeed a national treasure, as the King said.

I loved her performance in this not so famous movie:

That was the first film I remember seeing Maggie Smith in! I always thought the young man was incredibly handsome.

The following is a memoir of Dame Maggie Smith by a younger actor, Danny Lee Wynter (born 1985) who fell in love with her as a boy watching “Hook” (1991) again and again, and who ended up being cast in the TV film “Capturing Mary” (2007) with Dame Maggie. I post only the link below because his post is quite long, but very moving, proving that She was a pretty impressive person IRL!
