Brian Jordan Alvarez has seemingly struck gold with his new series. ”English Teacher” on FX.
He’s been a reliable source of online laughs for me on YT and the Twitz - his extreme filter characters kill me - but this writing, the unforced gay theme, and his cast assembly brings realness to the funny. I’ve crushed on him since he played the sex-worker in Special. He’s put in the work, and I hope this makes him a star. ️

Thankfully, it has been long enough that I was able to watch him without throwing up from the memory of his portrayal of Yack's indescribably annoying husband on the horrifically awful final final season of Will and Grace

I like the characters more than the scripts so far, but it's watchable.

Just started watching this tonight. I'm on the fence with this. I'm finding it borrows a lot from 'Glee', but tries too hard to be funny. I'm not liking the main character, as I never liked Brian Jordan Alvarez . I'll give it a few more episodes.

I want to see this!

I have always liked Brian Jordan Alvarez.  So funny.

He was on Morning Joe this morning.  Sounds like the NYT gave some good press.

Love his wacky, clever YT content.  I see English Teacher brought some of the players from "Gay and Wondrous Life...."

I hope the jealous gays don't come for him.  😉

I think the show is pretty funny. It's a good sign that the show makes fun of super "woke" values.
The weak link is Alvarez. He's not charming or appealing or attractive enough to play the lead. This is what happens when writers insist on starring in their own material.

Season 2 of the FX comedy will premiere Thursday, Sept. 25 at 9/8c with the first three episodes, the network announced on Monday. And good news for all you binge-watchers: The following day, the full 10-episode Season 2 will be available to stream on Hulu.

For me, Estefan was the only thing that made the last dreadful season of W&G watchable.  Poor Will... shacked up with the awful Grace in a suburban hellhole raising their kids together.  I imagine that McCoy got wise and ran for the hills.

Never heard of it until this topic.  Just watched S1 E1.  Loved it.  No sacred cows.

Season 2 just dropped.  Excellent so far.  Very funning.  Episode 3... 80 / 20... enough said.

Episode one was more of the same as last season...  it felt like work getting through it.  I like a couple of the actors and a couple of the characters but am only mildly entertained by it.

With ten minutes left in that episode I decided it was time this show joined The Mediocre Mrs. Maisel on the list of shows that I got tired of trying to enjoy and gave up on.  At least I got through three seasons of that one.  I'm tapping out on this show.

Fortunately there is a lot of content out there to watch.  I feel the same way about the dreadful Hollywood favorite Hacks, as you feel about the English Teacher.

IT HAS BEEN CANCELED.

"English Teacher" starred Brian Jordan Alvarez — who also created the series — as Evan Marquez, a high school teacher in Austin, Texas, who had to juggle needy students, overbearing parents and checked-out colleagues. Stephanie Koenig co-starred as Evan's best friend and fellow teacher Gwen, with Sean Patton as gym teacher Markie, Carmen Christopher as guidance counselor Rick and Enrico Colantoni as principal Grant Moretti.

Debuting in September 2024, "English Teacher" wrapped up its eight-episode freshman season with Evan surprisingly rekindling things with his ex Malcolm, played by Jordan Firstman. (Read our full season finale recap, and our post-season chat with Koenig.) "English Teacher" earned significant acclaim for its freshman run, including four Independent Spirit Award nominations, led by a nod for best new scripted series.

But the positive buzz was dampened by allegations from Alvarez's former friend and collaborator Jon Ebeling, who claimed that Alvarez sexually assaulted him while filming a web series years ago. (Alvarez's lawyer denies these claims, saying Ebeling gave verbal consent and referring to him as "a self-described manipulator.") Season 2 of "English Teacher" debuted quietly on FX in September, with all 10 episodes dropping at once on Hulu.

I know sexual assault is real and damaging, but it seems many of these allegations only come to light years after the event and only after the alleged perpetrator has gotten a significant degree of financial stability.  Until proven, allegations are just that, some are just bitterness and gossip.  I know nothing of this show nor the person being accused, but I am tired of these johnny come lately accusations and the rush to establish a hands off attitude.

In the 1990 s one of my medical students accused me of not giving her honors due to sexual discrimination.  Her evidence of this was a Nicole Miller tie with the title night and day.  I had many Nicole Miller graphic ties and this one had an stylishly sexy business woman wearing a long black business suit and stilettos and fishnet stockings.  The student told the medical school that she would drop the allegations if her grade was changed to the "honors" she felt she deserved.  I refused to change her grade and faxed a copy of the tie to the dean.  The matter was dropped at that point.  She suffered no consequences of her manipulative accusation.

He played one of the most annoying characters in TV history when he played Yack's husband during the horrific final season of the Will & Grace revival.  I'll never forgive him for the psychological scars that caused me.
