Norway Summer Visit Suggestions

Hello all.  I'll likely be visiting Norway, not on a cruise, in July for only 6 or 7 nights.  I'd love some suggestions.

What are your thoughts on Oslo, Bergen, Flam, Bergen Train, Flam Train, Naeroyfjord, Geiragerfjord, and any experience you've had with Norway in NutShell.

For me, the north is more interesting than the south. Tromsø in particular is a great base. Nordkapp is worth seeing if you're going further north. Bergen is beautiful too, with a lovely little lake just above it.

We spent 40 days traveling around Norway and is still one of SO's favorite vacations.  We didn't do a cruise either.  It was pretty easy to look online to find boat tours that go out in the fjords for a few hours, and that was enough for us.  After Oslo we drove across to Bergen and then headed south so we could do the trek up to Preikestolen (Pulpit rock), about 4 hours round trip.  I think anywhere you go in the country is going to be worth it.

The other places are pretty to look at, but if you intend to stay any length of time, Bergen and Oslo are more interesting. I know nothing about the gay scene, because I was only in Norway once, more than 30 years ago, on a tour with my elderly mother. The opera house in Oslo was the only place I have ever seen a production with singers singing in different languages : Aida sung in Norwegian by everyone except the lead, a visiting Russian artist who sang her role in Italian.

I'm assuming Norway has a number of Fjord Escorts as well.

Thank you so much everyone.  I will be there only 6 or 7 nights.  Of course I'll spend time in Oslo.  I really want to get up to see one of the great Fjords too.

That was very funny.  In the '90s I had a 1982 Ford Escort.  Horrible car.  This was after a 1988 Ford Tempo, which was the worst car on earth.

Oh yes, the Ford Tempo.  The smaller, less expensive version of the beautiful Mercury Sable... lol

This tourist site from Norway shows the location of several of the fjords.  Several are due west of Oslo and it's and easy drive across from Oslo to Bergen.  The blue dot south is Pulpit rock (which overlooks a fjord) and the big fjord to the north of Bergen is one we did as a day trip...I found the ferry schedule for the area and used it as our own fjord tour, stopping in one of the towns for lunch before heading back.

Rod,  Just about everywhere in Norway is worth visiting.  Amazing scenery in the fjord counties, particularly Geirangerfjord and Sognefjord.  Bergen is charming, including Grieg's beautiful home about 30 minutes south of Bergen.  Oslo was once the dullest capital in Europe.  No longer. Fascinating modern architecture, like the new National Gallery and Opera House.  Vigeland park, and taking the Holmenkollen tram high up in the city's mountains to see incredible views

As mentioned, you cannot go to Norway and not visit Grieg's house, but I would also recommend Nordkapp (otherwise known as the Northern Cape, well into the Artic Circle and level with Helsinki) because from around the middle of May to around the end of July, the sun never sets at that location

To clarify in case it isn't clear, Nordkapp is level with Helsinki in Longitude (it's actually slightly further east) but it's over 10 degrees of Latitude further north (11 to be precise). That's 660 nautical miles or over 1,200km.

The Oslo to Bergen railway is an absolute must. Be sure to get a window seat and get ready for some of the most beautiful scenery of your life, especially the last couple od hours before arriving in Bergen. Bergen itself is a stunner of a city, amazing food and arts scene and very very pretty.

I couldn't agree more with this assessment. All true. Another suggestion might be to also consider robbing a bank before you leave as you'll need plenty of cash!

I've just got back from a visit to Oslo. Beautiful, clean, friendly but expensive city.
